I'm a big indie rock nerd, but lately I haven't found much that I really enjoy. I think Bloc Party is one of the best bands out there today - their new album sounds amazing - but regardless of the band's obvious talent and creativity, they'll sound dated ten years from now. It's inevitable because they play driving, rhythm-guitar-heavy indie rock that no one would ever think may have ever existed outside of the first decade of the 21st century.

Lately I've been listening to a lot of classical as well - Beethoven and Bach mostly, I'm not really well-versed - and have lately been dipping into the Sinatra collection I amassed in college.

Then I came across this guy Fionn Regan, an Irish guy who sounds absolutely fantastic, and he has a timeless quality that I would equate more with say Sinatra, Tom Waits, or Dylan than with most other artists his age today. Check him out:

Does anyone else have any other recommendations for current musicians who have a really timeless sound?

I don't know if you would class him as current...

Sting.

He has such a unique voice.

The Police are back together and are in Vancouver at this moment, getting ready for a tour.

Don't know why they chose Vancouver to put the band back together, but I'm pleased.

Big U2 fan here. I would not consider them legendary on the scale of Elvis or the Beatles. For me I find a lot of truth in their music, if it makes any sense, and I beleive it will stand the test of time as one of  the better bands of our time.

A little to hippy for me. I would not put him in the same class wth Sinatra either, however, I am not really familiar with his status in Ireland. Im more of a blues guy. Favorite album ever is Rattle and Hum. The U2 album featuring BB King, they did some Hendrix together on tour, friggin awesome. Can't leave out Duke Ellington either if you like that big band swing.

Very unique and not really something I think would ever be considered dated.

James Blunt and John Mayer are probably two of the most talented musicians I've seen come up to the mainstream in a while.  I could see both of them lasting a long, long time such as Bob Dylan ad the like.

Also, James Blunt music is the second fastest way into a pair of panties that I know of.  A flight suit would be the first.  If you could wear a flight suit and play James Blunt, theoretically you could make a chick have an aneurysm and orgasm at the same time.

I think U2 was the best band of the 80s, although Achtung Baby (released in '91) will remain one of my favorite albums of all time.

As far as timeless music goes, I highly suggest VAST.  "Turquoise & Crimson" was such a good album that I chose my screenname in recognition of it.

They remind me a lot of The Cure. Like them both.
