The Wiki page linked to from the front page doesn't exist in the Wiki, so I thought I'd help out and try to write something decent. Apologies for only writing about mIRC and Trillian, but it's the only ones I know.
Looking for a history or technical guide as to what IRC is or how it works? Check out Wikipedia. This guide will only cover a simple explanation of what IRC is and on how to get onto the BF2S IRC channel.
What is IRC?
IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat. Simply put, IRC consists of networks (ex: irc.freenode.net) and channels on those networks (ex: #bf2s on freenode). The channels are chat rooms essentially where people can come to one place and talk.
So how can I get on the BF2S IRC channel?
* PJIRC (Java Chat)
PJIRC is an awesome Java IRC client that'll allow you to get on IRC from your web browser. You need to have Java installed to get it to work though.
Now, unless chuyskywalker decides to place PJIRC here on BF2S, you'll need to find a copy of PJIRC hosted out on the web somewhere. A good one is hosted by Viper007Bond and it can be found here:
http://pjirc.viper007bond.com/?chan=bf2 … eenode.net
* mIRC
Forgive me if this isn't 100% correct, but it's been years since I've had a clean install of mIRC, so it may be a bit off...
mIRC is by far the most popular Windows IRC client. It's also the best in most people's opinion. Here's how to get onto the BF2S IRC channel using mIRC:
1. Get the latest version of mIRC and install it.
2. Open up mIRC and type this into the little box at the bottom:
If you're already using mIRC and on another network, you can open the connection to Freenode in a new window (so you don't disconnect from the other server) by adding a "-m" like this:
3. Once you're connected to Freenode, you'll need to choose a nickname:
4. Now all that's left is to join the BF2S channel. You can do that via this command:
* Trillian
Trillian is an awesome multi-network IM client that supports AIM, MSN, ICQ, Yahoo, the Jabber protocol (which includes Google Talk), and of course IRC. Unfortanetly, Trillian works pretty poorly as an IRC client for a number of reasons that we won't get into now. However, if you're sure that you really would like to use Trillian for IRC, here's how:
1. Get Trillian if you don't already have it and install it.
2. Open up your connection manager and add a new IRC connection:
- Server Alias: Freenode
- Server address: irc.freenode.net::6667
- Nickname/Username: IRCNoob
3. Click the little white circle thing and select "Join a channel". Type "#bf2s" into that box.
