I have to say, I am impressed at how well this discussion has progressed with the derailment of a flame war.  Kudos to all of the participants thus far. +1 for all of you until my Karma points run out.  I love an actual debate that doesn't degrade to idealogical mud slinging.

Now rounding up all the Muslims or burning mosques is stupid and unfair treatment, agreed.  But pulling a person of middle-eastern descent and doing a once over before he/she got on a plane is not out of the question.  This is not Islamophobia, it's caution.

As to your other comments about where and when attacks have occured and my being "hooked by the media", you just keep believing that they aren't that big a threat.  As for me I will be paranoid and vigilant and keep me and mine as safe as possible.  There are Muslims living behind me.  I don't have spy cameras pointed at them, nor do I treat them different than any other neighbor - my kids play with their kids.  But you're damn skippy I keep more of an eye out on that neighbor than most others.
OK - you have a deep-seated suspicion that is fine. But you seem reasonable. There are others who might not be so reasonable. Those that might resort to unprovoked assaults, etc. on random muslims. People whose minds cannot differentiate between islam and terrorism. That body of people is growing. Some of the rhetoric on this forum shows that the signs aren't good. I'm just saying that the spread of this kind of generalisation and demonisation does not bode well for any of us.

You just are generalizing and stereotyping, not all thew Muslims do that.  You call terrorist a whole community for the crimes of a few.  Thank you for saying I'm right.
It's just not the same at all. I'm not saying all Muslims are terrorist. But the reason for discontent amongst Muslims comes from those within Islam itself. They have done specific acts to generate the feelings some have towards themselves. It may be true that some outside of Islam are taking advantage of this for their own benefit but Jews were not attacking Nazi's.
SO the jews never did anything to Germany?  My friend you really have to start learning some history.
Jews in Germany betrayed the german people at the end of WW1..just to have their balfour declaration.. The germans were winning the war but the Jews in germany promise the brits to bring the americans into the war in exchange of the balfour declaration.  We all know the end of the story.. America enter the War and kick ass leading to the capitulation

So when Hitler took power.. the jews were pissed because he spoke a lot against them..wanted to take back the country from them.. and in 1933 (long before any report of "concentration" camp) the jews started an international boycott against Germany  read and learn:

I don't know for you but when an international organisation start a general boycott against your country.. i think we can call that an act of war..

The actions of a group of Zionists don't justify the Holocaust.  So, you could say the Jews did nothing to Germany.  In fact, many Zionists worked with Hitler.

You speak of Koolade drinking sheep who don't think for themselves and unfortuntely there are a lot of them out there.  So far there don't seem to be any in this thread.

I will agree that the possibility, however remote, of a holocaust like event involving Muslim haters could take place.  However, there are enough Islamic countries to prevent this, unlike the time of the Holocaust for the Jews.

So if Islamophobia is a reality, I seriously doubt it will progress very far even with all the sheep running around.

Imho, Muslims have not even approached the level of discrimination that Black/African-American folks or Jewish folks deal with.  As Sgt_mango333 said, suspicion does not equal hate.  Am I suspicious of everyone in Muslim style attire?  No.  Do I watch them  a little bit longer than others?  Yes, but I notice strange behavior in general because I’ve been trained to watch for it in my profession.  Do I hate Muslims?  No, that’s ridiculous.  I do business with them quite regularly and they’re very nice people.  The extremists in their religion do them a disservice by putting the spotlight on them.  Are some people suspicious of all Muslims?  Probably.  Again, because of the reality that extremist Muslims function as normal citizens until they carry out their attack.  How could the perception of any rational person not change in light of that?

Erring on the side of caution is the duty of a free society to keep its citizens safe.  Endangering people because we don’t want to “offend” someone is the definition of foolish.  We live in a much different reality after 9/11 and the Muslims I know understand that.  They’re even sensitive enough to do their best to live their lives in a way that puts people at ease.  Rational people don’t suspect the barber who’s lived here his whole life simply because he’s a Muslim.

You speak of Germany as if the German Jews had no right to it.  Is there a little anti-semitism in that remark?  Sounds like they were trying to protect their country by keeping idiot tyrants from engaging in world war.   That's not even close to terrorism or an act of war as you say.  Even so, as Serge said, this doesn't justify anti-semitism on a global scale.

I don't give two shits if you support Hitlers views, he was wrong, he got punished, but the Jews deserved nothing of his anger and hatred towards them.

yea my english is not really good.. if "in any way i approve" means that "i approve" then its my mistake.

let me rephrase:

PS I don't approve the treatment of the jews in germany and all occupied nation between 1939 and 1945

or

im against the way the jews were treated in Germany and all occupied territory between 1939-1945

or maybe:

in NO way i approve ..

sorry about that

The fact that you guys even think them of them as different people is bad. I dont look at people and go, "hmm Muslim, hmmm Asian, hmmm white" They are just people. Im mainly thinking Goth, Emo, Chav, Hot, not hot. etc. That is generalization but at least it isn't based on their skin colour, and is based at least on something you can tell someones behaviour on.

the boycott was called in 1933.. there was no concentration camp during these days.. there was anti-semitism in germany of course and there was anti-semitism in all europe too..  im not saying i support hitler, im not denying the holocaust, i was replying to someone who said that the jewish community never did anyting to Germany..   knowing all the influence of the jewish community in the world back then and still today, a call for a boycott from them can hurt a country really bad. thats all im saying.. i don't justify the holocaust.. im against all form of targeted killing.. im not a psycho but i can see why some jewish shop got attacked when the germans knew that the jews called a boycott on their country.  like i understand but don't approve why some arab got beaten in american right after 911..

Considering it only took 7 to take out a few thousand, that's too many.  Look, I'm not advocating treating Muslims unfairly.  But not being suspicious of someone who matches the description of a terrorist or criminal is insane.  That doesn't mean you have to discriminate and that doesn't mean you have to peg them as a terrorist or criminal.  But by all means, I would be upset if I matched the description of a killer and I wasn't questioned or suspect.

Its just that there's millions of innocent people out there whose appearance matches that of a "terrorist" as the latter is defined by that islamophobic mentality. Its a lot different than your appearance matching that of an individual killer like you said. When you've reached a point in a society where anyone of a darker complexion is viewed as a possible enemy you can bet your bottom dollar there's going to be a huge problem. And it all starts with you being more suspicious of your Muslim neighbors, whose kids are playing with your kids.

About the OP: I think Islamophobia is a fact in the US already. But I don't see another Holocaust coming any time soon... Its a totally different case than antisemitism I guess...

(PS in NO way i approve the treatment of the jews in germany and all occupied nation between 1939 and 1945 but saying that they were just poor victims and that they did nothing at ALL is just a lie)

edit: typo
Seems to me to be a gross distortion of historical fact.

Jews in that era did commit some horrific attrocities, but for the most part they all occured a long way from Germany. I have always believed that much of the hatred for the Jews in Nazi Germany stemmed from a economic perspective angle, not neccessarily anything to do with the Jews in Germany having more money than everyone else, but they were percieved to. In a time when Germany was suffering from hyper inflation this created tensions which added to other anti-Semitic stereotypes gave Hitler the leverage he needed to incite mass hatred of the Jews.

Anyway, back to the point at hand.
I can understand the suspiscion of Muslims, as has been so eloquently expressed by Stingray and sgt_mango. But this attitude is not something that should be encouraged. When rational people hold these views they are mostly harmless, but there are a lot of irrational people who can easily turn suspicion into lynching and rioting.
If any laws or legal powers specifically targeting Muslims are ever passed I can see that being the begining of a very slippery slope.

You just are generalizing and stereotyping, not all the Muslims do that.  You call terrorist a whole community for the crimes of a few.
...when this very poll is an exercise in generalization.

How can a poll be a generalization, when you have two possible and opposite answers, yes or no.  The poll refers to all non Muslim countries, not just America.  I must say this, because some people thought the Islamophobia was related only to the US, and is related to all non Muslim countries.
