Ive had beter reads than this. My big time favourite is Isaac Asimov's Foundation , Caves of Steel, The Naked Sun and the Robots of Dawn.
hehe, but comparing Asimov to Lem is like comparing BF2 to wolfenstein... they arent even in the same league!
and yes, i agree the foundation-books are the best books ever! have you read all 9 books?

I LOVE HEROIC FANTASY ;-)
Well hopefully book 7 is just a bad book in an otherwise good series because I've nearly finished it and I'm still waiting for something significant to happen.

And is it just me, or does he name his characters too much alike. A lot of the women have almost the same names with just a couple of letters swapped about. It's gets damn confusing at times.
well i agree its not the most orginal writer ever :p and i agree that after few first books it slow down and there is a lot of secondari people and actions , he get far away from prinipal action. it need little patience, and its sayd that he is writing a 1 last book ( aroung 2000 pages ) who will over the series ( me i have to wait until it is finished, go out and then translated in french   )

well i have little choice, when you finish reading tolkien and few others , you have no choice than start reading second choice writers ;-) BUT the one that is realy good is Terry Goodkind and his series of Sword of True
im still waiting for the boog 6 and others to be translated in french

WHY THEY NEED SO MUCH TIME TO TRANSLATE
Well if you haven't already read them, try Raymond E. Feist's books. They are good.

I've read some of Terry Goodkind's stuff. I also quite like Terry Brooks, Weiss & Hickman, Dan Abnett, and some others.

Well Ive read Prelude to Foundation,Forward the Foundation, Foundation, Foundation and Empire, Second Foundation, Foundation's Edge, Foundation and Earth. Dont know which two books i missed, though I havent read those books which were not written by Asimov (e.g.: Foundation's Triumph).

I know that Lem and Asimov are not in the same league, I was just curious about Lem, because his works are also regarder as sci-fi classics.

Chariots of the Gods? - Erich von Däniken

von Däniken's startling theories of our earliest encounters with alien worlds, based upon his lifelong studies of ancient ruins, lost cities, potential spaceports, and a myriad of hard scientific facts that point to extraterrestrial intervention in human history.

I just finished "The Curse of Cain" - J. Mark Powell & LD Meagher, it was about the assasination of Abe Lincoln.  Very boring book, had to force myself to finish it.

Now reading: "Next" - Michael Crichton... excellent book so far.  But I have thoroughly enjoyed most of his books.

Haven't read in a while, but check out the Vampire Chronicles. I'm going out on a limb, but The Vampire Lestat is like the best book I've ever read, and Queen of the Damned is pretty bad ass too. I've read books 1-6, 8 & 9. All pretty sweet.

Angels & Demons was amazing too, waaaay better than The DaVinci Code.

Also, Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes is amazing too.

You do know that Von Däniken later retracted all his theories and admitted that there was no proof of any alien influence in our development.

Y'know, I don't know why Tom Clancy is considered to be such a good writer. I mean, the plots and stories are good, but the man cannot write.
I have tried to read several of his books, but the terrible writing style turned me away before the plot sunk it's claws in. I'm sure I'll attempt his work again - to save time, can someone suggest the Tom Clancy novel generaly reckognised as the best one?
I used to read Clancy books and really enjoyed them.  One thing to make sure if that you weren't trying to read one of the many pulp novels that were churned out with his name all over it but was not written by him.  Without Remorse and the rest of the Jack Ryan series were gripping stuff.

I'm reading Thud which is part of the excellent Discworld series

Just finished Next by Michael Crichton.  Not one of his better ones, but still my favorite author.  State of Fear really made me think.
