Imagine the following scenario: God (for the Religious)/a group of scientists (for the non Religious) tells you that the only way to save Mankind is killing your own child.  If you don't do it, Mankind would become extinct in a hundred years, but your child could live his/her whole life.  Please, don't start with "This is BS", it's a moral dilemma, and it's hypothetical.
What would you do?  You'd let your son live and condemn all Mankind, or you'd kill your kid?

Well, by screwing mankind I'd be screwing my son (oooh errr...) so if you wanted anyone to live, you'd have to kill your son. That said, mankind hasn't really impressed me so far during my time on the planet, so I'd probably just let us all die.

Remember, if you don't kill your son now mankind would become extinct in 100 years, not now, so your kid could live anyway.

Not kill my son in that case. I'm sure if we tried we could invent a way to save ourselfs! And if not, tough luck.

Screw mankind. We're ultimately doomed anyway - what's the big deal in speeding the process up?

If God told me... I would agree to kill my son. As "vulcans" (lol) would say "it would be a logical decesion". But I would hope that God will spare him in the last seccond and tell me to kill a sheep instead.

If scientists told me... I would refuse.

I would kill the guy/god/whatever who was putting this presure on me. I would kick him in the nuts and stomp his guts out. Then we live godless like we already do.

Didnt abraham have this dilema?  Something loosely based on it, anyways he was meant to sacrafice his son, was a test he passes yay!  Me however, nah screw the lot of u, theres no way I will kill my son!  If I went to hell for it, least I would be in the knowledge that I wasnt going to betray my own flesh and blood.

God told Abraham to kill his son Isaac, and he did, according to the Old Testament BS.

I don't have kids, so I could not honestly answer this.

I dont have kids, however i did try to put myself in the position before making an answer

Ok, so we all become extinct.... everyone just drops dead in 100 years, or everyone slowly dies off?

How old is my make believe son?

The only circumstances that i would kill him in would be :

If everyone slowly does die off, then i would kill him, however, only if he was a few months old? why? becuase i would eventually loose my make believe wife, my mum, my dad, the rest of my family, not to mention my pet hamster, aswell as all of my friends.... for one poxy kid?

however, if everyone drops dead in 100 years time, and i let him live, my son will probably also be dead before the 100 years are up anyway, so if everyone litteraly drops dead on the 100year, i might aswell save him.

does that make any sense?

It does make sense.  As someone else that doesn't have kids (thank God!) I could try to reason out a sensible answer and that'd be pretty damn close to what you put.  However, my pet hamster would be as make-believe as my wife and soon-to-be-dead child.

No, not everyone can imagine the dilemma.  Perhaps I'm a sociopath but I can't even begin to imagine myself in that position.  Right now, I can only surmise what I'd do through reasoning but that's not the same as flesh & blood, standing next to you.

I'll have to agree that mankind is likely to kill itself anyway, and yeah, I've grown rather disillusioned with my species.  So yeah, might as well let the kid live.
