Anyone know why it is that after almost 200 hours of playing BF2 with games running smoothly I'm starting to have the games become choppy and laggy to where I can't even play?  Like I'm talking almost every time I play know at one point it will start acting up.

I don't recall downloading ANYTHING that would be the change to cause this.  I tried uninstalling other games to free space, defragment the HD etc.

Please help!!

I have the same kind of problem, and I've just noticed it today.  I have about 200h too, and haven't really had this problem, but when I'm in-game my ping will fluctuate from 60 to 200 on, what should be, a good server.  It's not wildly fluctuating... more of a slow up and down sort of thing like there's something running in the background of my machine that's soaking up bandwidth, but there's definitely not and I've confirmed this, re-confirmed, and double re-confirmed.  I tried some of the things in the sticky, but none really had an effect that I can tell.  My cable bandwidth is normally somewhere between 2.5mbps and 3.2mbps (pretty damned good)... so I don't know... not intending on derailing your thread because of my issue (which sounds similar or same as yours), but I did want to let you know that I'm having the same problem.

Don't want to sound like a tool if this is obvious, but it helped me when someone pointed it out elsewhere, so...

(You'll have to Alt + Tab BF2 for this, do it whenever your ping starts fluctuating or the game starts getting choppy)

Try Ctrl + Alt + Delete, then in the Windows Task Manager box that pops up, click the processes tab, and click on the Memory Usage column until everything is arranged highest to lowest from top to bottom. [wtf]death_kill_u, you said that it felt like there was something running in the background, here's your chance to see if there's something unbeknown to you that's whoring all of your speed away. If there's anything high up (or maybe even a little lower) that is unrelated to BF2 and won't make your computer crash by closing it, then end the processes.

Like I said, I don't know if this is blindingly obvious or not. So... Good luck anyway.

i have noticed this as well recently. My ping goes from steady 45 to 400 and even with my steady ping of 45 the game is choppy as hell. It could be a server thing but i only play one sever ever and this problem just recently started occuring.

i too have the same issue.  I did everything.  I ran brand new cable from the pole straight to a splitter then to my modem.  I updated all drivers.  So then I called my ISP and was told that they had a specific issue with EA game servers.  He told me that sprint at Chicago was doing something or some bull shit, IDK.

SO I did a trace route to several BF2 servers that I play on and sure as shit as soon as it hit sprintlink by Chicago my ping times were going from around 20's to over 700.  So that could be an issue.  There are times when I can play for a few hours and all is good but this problem is so erratic that I never know when.  For example today U played this morning and all was good, then later this evening I found one server that I could halfway play on.  Anyway its something to look into.

Thanks DK_Vision for the tip.  I'll try that tonight.  It blew my mind when 90% of the time I'm chop free etc then recently it was 90% CHOPPY.  Whenever that happens I have to exit the entire game program and go back in.  I will say that the last 48 hrs have been back to normal.  It might've been a phase with some servers or some such.

I did a couple steps I found from this thread too which I think has only helped me get into Multi-player faster truthfully but hey, I don't need to watch the intro movies every time.

http://forums.bf2s.com/viewtopic.php?id=22556

I did steps #1,4 & 6 which makes loading the game really fast and could've helped the chop issue some.  Btw, my ping would be lower than most people in the game but I'd be chopping so much I couldn't do anything.  All I'd hear was, " Enemy...enemy...enemy... " over and over like a broken record and I got X-ray vision and saw through building etc

If anyone wants to do the rest of the tips in that thread go for it.  I'm gonna check into DK-Visions tip for the memory allocation as that's the application that " can handle x amount " of traffic in a given moment.

I hope this thread I opened ( on an old issue I'm sure but still is an issue for some of us ) helps stop the chop for all of you as I find it's the MOST AGGRAVATING thing about video game playing.

I will post more on this thread on successes I have and if anyone has success with these please write in on this so others can see it and get rid of their chop problems.  You know they'd be grateful as we will be.

Thanks,
Sarciss
