House Democrats finish '100 hours' agenda by passing oil revenue bill

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- House Democrats brought their "100-hour" legislative agenda to a successful close Thursday evening with passage of legislation designed to force oil and gas companies to pay more royalties on some offshore leases and end subsidies and tax deductions they have been receiving amid record prices for crude.

The final vote on the bill -- the sixth of six items Democrats had vowed to pass in 100 hours of legislative action -- was 264 to 163, with 36 Republicans crossing the aisle to support the Democrat-sponsored bill.

The House finished work on all six measures in about 42 hours of floor time, less than half the limit set on their self-imposed clock. However, the legislation must still navigate the Senate, which tends to operate at a more leisurely pace, and could also face President Bush's veto pen.
Whatever the outcome in the Senate, clearly we are witnessing a return to integrity in the House, and an end to the do-nothing style of legislature favored by the GOP.

I implemented 9/11 commissions recommendations? Clinton was just on tonight saying that they hadn't.. odd.

Edit: I misunderstood her. I just re-watched it.

for a while there it looked bad...
Hopefully this continues. I'm a lib (i know most of you will know that), but I am very disenfranchised with the Democrats in House and Senate. Not ALL of them... but a pretty large number. Politicians are just too conservative these days. Hopefully Obama can be a bridge between moderates and REAL liberals, because America is slowly devolving into the tyrannical empire we first rebelled from.

Why are you disenfranchised with the Democrats in Congress? They've been in power for what, like a week? Who exactly has disenfranchised you?

Lol government for the lose. Once again the government fails at taking prompt economic action and discretionary fiscal policy chalks up another big red F for failure. Congress reduces subsidies and tax breaks for oil companies with the justification of record crude prices, except now crude has fallen to the more normal $50/barrel. I'm sure the oil corps are screaming about kicking them while they're down.

hey, does anybody else realize that 6 days doesn't add up to 100 hours??

Am I the only one terrified by the lack of understanding of basic mathematics principles by our nation's decision makers?

I mean, they mention all those statistics when they talk to the public, but do they verify... could they verify if they're even true?

I want to start a lobbying organization just to tell politicians bullshit statistics and see if any of them run with them.

How could they not complete their 100 hour agenda?

They started and stopped the clock whenever it pleased them.

Government gridlock FTW
