Closer to the end my fellow bf2sers .

The Doomsday Clock is a symbolic clockface maintained since 1947 by the Board of Directors of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists at the University of Chicago. It uses the analogy of the human race being at a time that is "minutes to midnight" where midnight represents destruction by nuclear war. The clock has appeared on the cover of each issue of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists since its introduction.

The number of minutes before midnight, a measure of the degree of nuclear threat, is updated periodically. The clock is currently set to five minutes to midnight, having been advanced by two minutes on January 17, 2007.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The scientists who mind the Doomsday Clock moved it two minutes closer to midnight on Wednesday -- symbolizing the annihilation of civilization and adding the perils of global warming for the first time.

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, which created the Doomsday Clock in 1947 to warn the world of the dangers of nuclear weapons, advanced the clock to five minutes until midnight. It was the first adjustment of the clock since 2002.

"We stand at the brink of a second nuclear age," the bulletin's board of directors said in a statement.

They pointed to
North Korea's first nuclear test,
Iran's nuclear ambitions, U.S. flirtation with "bunker buster" nuclear bombs, the continued presence of 26,000 American and Russian nuclear weapons and inadequate security for nuclear materials.

But the scientists also said destruction of human habitats wreaked by climate change brought on by human activities is a growing danger.

"Global warming poses a dire threat to human civilization that is second only to nuclear weapons," they said.
Silly scientist havent been reading these forums, otherwise they would know global warming is a farce..lol
The announcement was made in news conferences in London and Washington.

"We foresee great peril if governments and societies do not take action now to render nuclear weapons obsolete and to prevent further climate change," theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking of the University of Cambridge, a member of the bulletin's board of sponsors, told reporters in London.

I remember back in grade school during the early 80's when scientists told us we would be driving around in hover cars and have colonies on the moon by now.

Bollocks.

Those scientist weren't responsible for creating the atomic bomb.

haha i was just reading that.

Is it just me or do these people have a bit of a morbid fascination with the end of the world. That's not to say the threat isn't real it just strikes me odd that they have a clock for it....you know?

Still.  We were told of a ton of advancements that never happened.  Ask anyone who was in grade school or high school in the late 70's early 80's if they thought they would be driving a plain old car in 2007.

All I am trying to say is, some of the things scientists talk about can not be taken at face value when it comes to predictions.

True, some of the things scientist predict can't be taken at face value.  However, this one involves human nature.  We have been known to kill each other quite a bit so it's more conceivable than predictions involving advances in technology.

Actually they had a deep sense of remorse after creating the bomb. They feel an obligation to keep the awareness up. The clock has moved backwards at times. There are very valid points in the article.

Do you really think we will have flying cars ?? The answer is no. Pilots have to pass a shit load of tests, just think of all the suicide jihaders. lols.

Maybe you should have hired European scientists instead of American ones.

Sorry, couldn't help it .

Seriously, what happens when they get to 30 seconds to midnight or so?

Well you can place an order for a skycar. Or more practically you can easily get cars that turn into speedboats.
The technology for these things is there, they just aren't economically viable.

Everyone knows that mankind will cease to exist at the end of Kali which will be 2010 or 2012 I forgot. Cant wait to see what those scientists will do when that happens.

My guess would be cease to exist.

Just a theory based on the fact that scientists are, to the best of my knowledge, a subset of mankind.

The reason we don't have flying cars is because people aren't ready for them.  Us scientists (that according to Pheonix, don't know anything) could make them if we were given support and an assurance by people that they would be used intelligently.  But we don't get support for things like a space program, among others; and we're pretty sure that the flying car would unleash a whole new wave of chaos into this world the likes of which we've never seen.  Examples:  drunk flying, midair crashes raining down shrapnel onto the people hundreds or thousands of meters below, and of course one must not forget the most dangerous risk of all... a woman driver...in a flying car!!(/sarcasm).  And I'm pretty sure flying car concepts were all in movies like back to the future 2, not in research labs across the world.

Oh, and Pheonix; that computer you're sitting at wouldn't be possible without quantum mechanics, you know, that stuff you all thought was useless when it was being developed a hundred years ago.  Oh, and your cell phone, pda, tv's, radar, radios, mass produced vehicles, fluorescent lights, laser pointers, GPS, modern climate predictions, microwaves, modern medicines, MRI's (really NMR's, but you all we're afraid you'd turn green and have three legged children, so we changed the name...look it up), MP3 Players, the internet, etc.   Yah, that was all physics right there buddy, with Maxwell's Equations and Quantum Mechanics.
