Iranian politicians and their media mobilise against the hardline stances of Ahmedinejad.

If there is one thing that can be said of Iranians, something I have learned during my reading of a book on the modern history of the country (1900-present day), is that they always have opinions of their own and they will express them. Have faith in the good people of Iran.

One interesting snippet for me was the following:

"There has also been criticism of the conference the president organised last month questioning the World War II holocaust which lost Iran much sympathy internationally."

We don't need hardliners like Kim Jong-Il, George W. Bush, Mahmoud Ahmedinejad, Ariel Sharon, Ian Paisley, Binyamin Netanyahu and Ismael Haniya - the world needs reasonable leaders who are not possessed of the garbage 'you're either with us or against us' mentality. I hope the Iranians manage to exert meaningful influence on their leaders, for their own sake.

The people of Iran really are the best hope of avoiding a war.
I know they don't like Amadinnerjacket, they know they are being dragged to a confrontation and they don't like it.


It's sad that small groups of people doom others to violent deaths.

I wonder if the tribal warriors vaporized by us in Afganistan are happy the Taliban decided to shelter OBL. There wasn't much value for them in being involved against us; it just doesn't make any sense. Surely the Taliban understood that the defeat of the Soviets was brought about by our supplying the war goods, did they really think we would be lured into Afganistan and destroyed by the thousands? LOL.

So a small group of people decided that Afganistan would be the in your face terrorist country, and tens of thousands of their people are dead.
In Iraq a small group of people decided to give the one finger salute to the world community, and now hundreds of thousands have died.
In America, if you believe the main stream media, Bush and his advisers have ordered 3000+ Americans to their deaths over oil, I guess.
Sad.

Hopefully cooler heads will prevail and the Iranians will deal with their own problematic leaders before it becomes yet another enviromental and humanirtarian disaster.

I have a question: is Iran considered an Islamic state?  If so, the citizens of Iran will have to get rid of the radical imams before their voice can be heard.  This may be a problem since, according to the Shi'a, an Imam is a leader that must be followed since he is appointed by Allah.

yeha, not the iranian president is in hot water, as the supreme ayatollah is p***ed oiff at him too. and said supreme ayatollah has the power to overrurle the president on foriegn policy. hmmm, sounds like the iranian presdient is soon going to be ousted hopefully. note: students are p****ed off at him, theiranan parliament is p***ed off at him, his boss is p***ed off at him. oh dear.

Iran, relatively speaking, is one of the most advanced countries in the entire middle east with good infrastructure, public services, universal suffrage (men and women), minorities rights and a system of government that is in fact very popular with the people of Iran. And it is an Islamic Republic.

The Imam problem is solved by the fact that the Supreme Islamic Council (kind of like the Senate or the President) has the power to veto any law, etc. deemed too far of a departure from true Islam.

The people of Iran are not going to get rid of the Islamic Republic they fought in vast numbers to create out of the tyranny of the foreign puppet dictatorships that preceded it. The people of Iran are also not going to let a hardliner destroy all the progress they've made in setting up a succesful and prosperous state.

Hum, I don't know what to say - but I think there has been a reason why Iran has quite disliked the unquestioned authority of Saddam in Iraq, probably not even religious differences at first.
They are not stupid after all. With oil price dropping they maybe notice what would happen to them if they'd cut off oil support - or worse, if they'd be cut off from oil delivery. With some states thinking about serious sanctions they might have got a vast idea of what kind of economical disadvantages could possibly arise, when holding onto their present strategy...
