alright, let me just say, i know a wired connection is better than wireless, and if i could have a wireless connection, i would love it but....i am living in an off campus house here at college and we can not have a wired connection....so we have a wireless.  now...

I set it up about a week ago at most, and everything was working well until today or yesturday....no my internet speed is down to 18.0 Mbps rather than the 50 or so i was getting a few days ago, AND, my signal strength says "low - good (rare)" whereas it used to say "very good - excellent"....

first question is:

anyone know why this could be happening....ive tried moving aroudn the antennas on the router already and resetting everything...

second question is:

anything i can do....that is CHEAP! im poor...and still dont have a bed to sleep on here at school....lol...so...yea...

1) Buy some Pringles.
2) Find some wire.
3) Eat Pringles.
4) Fashion crude ariel from Pringles tube and piece of wire.
5) Push one end of homemade ariel into wireless ariel connector.
6) Put lots of tinfoil everywhere.

As if by magic your connection will become great.

(Make sure you point the tube at your closest access point)

18 mb down is decent are you sure thats you had 50 before? Go to http://speedtest.net . When you are done running the test you will see at the bottom right a share link, post it here.

ROFL, a cantenna FTW.

But seriously it sounds as if you are using a standard B/G radio so you are operating within the same frequency band as many other pieces of equipment. A few things to look out for ...

* Has the ISP / provider changed the location of their anttena ?
* Has the ISP / provider recently added another dozen or so wireless users to the same service you are using ?
* Are you located near to a Medical facility ? The frequency band you are operating in is the ISM (Industrial, Scientific, Medical) so you can well imagine the various pieces of equipment that use the same frequency band. For example, Remote garage door openers, wireless phones, baby monitors, LOTS of medical radio equipment etc etc etc.
* Have a good look at the "line of sight" from your antenna back to the services provider. How many obstacles are in the line of sight. You may need to use an outdoor antenna ...

Food for thought.

He means network speed. Will have been 54Mbps optimally.

I have Roadrunner with my main computer wired to the router and this laptop in the next room. I would like to figure out how to speed them up but dont know how.

Roadrunner is cable. They have different plans, I would expect more than  what you are getting. Is someone else using the connection right now also?

Why is everyone publishing Speedtest results on a thread about wireless network connectivity, seems kinda unrelated to me. Anyway, ho hum.

Are you actually connected wireless to a server, or just to a wireless router somewhere else in the halls?

arnt i right in thinking you are talking about the connection speed from your PC to the router.
Even at the low speed of 18Mbps it is far greater than your Internet connection, so no worries.

Please no flames if i have missed something here.

What problems is this causing as you haven't told us what's wrong.

As my learned colleague above has stated, 18mbps is probably faster than your ISP connection speed so unless you are sharing this connection with lots of other people it shouldn't be an issue.

Can you give us a bit more info?

right then....

are the other three on line as well, if so it is far more likely to be the fact that you are sharing bandwidth with them.

do a speed check when you are the only on on-line, with an Internet program as mentioned before. (this will be speed between the house router and the Internet) i am confident that this will still not be quicker than your wireless connection from your router to your pc, at any strength, even the low 18Mbps.

Do the same when the others are on-line and you should see a difference, especially if they are doing bandwidth hungry things like downloading large files.

Still, it would be nice to get the full connection speed from your router, but i don't know if you can improve this easily.

Hope this helps.
and good gaming.

BTW, this is a combined Fruitloop and UseOfWeapns post.

I don't know if you can, but if you can, try connecting to the router using a network cable and see if it makes a difference. That way we will know if it's the network being slow, or if it's a radio signal issue.
