Some should also read some history about what the Swastika really is so your not suprised when you see it on the wall of a religous area. For the symbol is originally Hindu.
Definitely shouldn't be banned. I understand that many people view it as being quite racist, but to me it's more of symbol of states rights. The civil war wasn't about slavery, the civil war was about the federal government trying to dictate what states could do. Slavery just happened to be the straw that broke the camels back.
And believe it or not, I know an African American who sports a confederate flag on his car. I think he does it mainly for shock value though.

Swastika is a symbol of good luck
i believe the hindu symbol was slighlty different than a swastika BTW
edit: upon slightly deeper investigation, the nazi's appear to be one of the first groups to use a right facing swastika, almost all previous uses of swastikas are left facing

I live in coastal South Carolina in a city of 47,000+ next to Charleston. You wont see many Confederate flags flying in the city (but damn the bumper stickers). Once you get into the rural areas every other house between a fork in the road and a convenient store has them flapping on a pole, always with the Stars and strips flowing atop, followed by a POW/MIA below and then the Stars and Bars. These flags are usually weather worn and have cars sitting on cinder blocks around them. You know what gets me? The U.S flags always look new.
I also have a rusty shotgun in my truck, pick up stray hunting dogs and always refer to my elders with a Sir and/or ma’am. And if you’re wondering about the N word – it’s very lightly used down here y’all.
no. Because most people who only understand history from what they are taught in grade school think the US civil war over slavery.

no, its only saying that those who died deserved it. which they did, assuming they weren't pressed into service. the same goes for confederates, though.Mr.Casual wrote:

Being insulted by the Confederate flag indicates the same sort of ignorance and bigotry that you just mentioned. People need to wise up and actually study the American Civil War before spouting their mouth off about it.Reciprocity wrote:

Briefly skimmed the wikipedia article. That's cool if someone sees it as a symbol of their heritage, but sometimes it can be in bad taste. Like someone else pointed out with the Nazi flag, what if someone born under the third reich went around waving the nazi flag around?
However, I respect other people's opinion. If they want to display the Confederate flag, that's fine by me. Like I said earlier, I don't think it should be banned. However, when I see people with that, they are usually white trash Southerners. That's just my opinion, and I doubt they care what I think. Also, I see it as they are showing a positive reinforcement of the Civil War. I think the Civil War was terrible and should be left in the past, we shouldn't split our country, and it's awesome that we've managed to stick together; so I don't like it when people want to secede and all that.
Oh well, just my two cents

Wow, dude please explain? How did they deserve to die? They fought for their country. Whether its the Wehrmacht(who were btw not Nazi's) or the Confederates(Rebels) they fought for their respected countries. I sir have respect for any person who joins their respected military and if they die then they should be looked upon as heroes. But that is my opinion and I am kinda bisaed due to being in the military myself.Ender2309 wrote:

But as far as the thread goes I dont have a problem with the Star and Bars at all. Its just a flag BTW.
The American Civil War and WWII are not the same conflict. The ACW is already in the past. Why bury it any further? More folks than "white trash southerners" sympathize at least somewhat with Johnny Reb. States rights was an important issue in the Civil War. Slavery was a convenient political excuse to exercise federal heavy-handedness, much like some of the same bullying attitude that survives to this day.mtb0minime wrote:

"So I don't like it when people want to secede and all that."
So, what do you think about eastern Washington wanting to "secede" from western Washington, due to complaints of unfair representation? Or how about a "fictional" scenario. What if the Federal government decides to override a state's protests to deposit nuclear waste, and the state declares secession?
From what I understand, some rappers have used the confederate flag in thier videos, as in southern pride. While the confederate flag has some bad history, doesn't mean it should be banned, just like the swastika, as previously posted.
Racsim is a belief, a prejudice of the mind, a simple mind to be exact. Confederate flag? fine. any racist shithead that says its the flag of "white supremacy" should also, logically, admit that this flag was felled by the union army, an army that believed in freeing the slaves. Other aspects of the flag, maybe southern pride, is ok.
Be proud of your heritage. Im swedish. I may someday hold a swedish flag up and say "swedish pride". But, anyone who waves a flag in the air with the intent of saying "fuck the niggers!" we can all nod in agreement and simply say "dumbfuck" and go about our day. Its the freedoms of America to able to do such an asinine thing as be a proud racist. Let them have thier day. Once that day ends, they can go home, sex up thier cousin, drink some beer, and beat the shit out of thier wife/cousin, and the world continues unchanged....

so African Americans don't find the symbol of southern state's rights to enslave human beings, offensive? No, slavery wasn't THE cause of the Civil War, but before the Civil War, slavery, after the Civil War, no slavery. the vast majority of confederate soldiers we dirt poor farmers who couldn't afford their own land, much less a slave. The vast majority or Union soldier were just as racist as anyone from the south or anywhere else.unnamednewbie13 wrote:

you cant pick and choose symbolism. you cant wave the confederate flag and say it stands for everything except crimes against humanity.
Go to Israel and wave a right handed swastika flag. dont worry, you'll just explain to them that the flag represents the economic and social advances of the Third Reich, but has nothing to do with genocide, they'll understand, they might even fly it under the Israeli flag.

Even if you wanted to ban the flag, you couldn't, so the whole debate is pointless. Besides, it's dying out anyways. Georgia already replaced the Confederate part of their flag (although probably as a hilarious flip of the finger to the anti-flaggers, they replaced it with the bars in the style of the 1st Confederate flag). South Carolina took the Confederate flag off of the state capitol, and Ole Miss has toned down its Confederate imagry.
No. You just can't. It doesn't represent slavery or old ways, it represents a country (one that doesn't exist anymore but still) & people died for that country.
If you can't stand for something, you'll fall for anything.
[Bill Lumbergh] Yeah....I'm gonna sorta have to disagree with you there. [/Bill]unnamednewbie13 wrote:

States rights wasn't as important as you put it out to be. The Southerners were getting rich off of exporting the cotton, grown by slaves, to Europe and did not want to lose that. If abolitionists got into Congress and freed the slaves, they'd be losing out on bags upon bags of money. The Southern states had be threatening to secede whenever they didn't get there way for some time by 1860. Henry Clay helped to delay the issue tearing the country apart by helping with the Missouri Compromise and Compromise of 1850. The issue of slavery was not an excuse, because it had threatened the unity of the country and Lincoln wouldn't stand for it to happen.
thats a good point therer DesertFox423
Interesting read. I can understand why at the First Battle of Bull Run, there was confusion caused by the Stars and Bars and the Stars and Stripes. From a distance it would be difficult to distinguish the two.The Bartenders Son wrote:

This confusion created the need for a new design and the ""The Confederate Battle Flag" (actually the "Navy Jack" was born.
The "Confederate Battle Flag" does seem to be synonomous with those looking for some type of Southern affinity for rebelliion in todays world. However banning such an important article of American history would be a disservice to all those brave souls, who gave their lives for the progression of this country while fighting under that flag.

A happy side effect of banning it would be the withdrawal from public consumption of all copies of the 'Dukes of Hazzard' movie.
To answer the original question: Don't be stupid.

This is the problem with the world today, we try to ban everything we don't like. No the Confederate flag should not be banned, people should be allowed to fly it if they please. The First Amendment protects our right to free speech, not just agreeable speech.
I assume you'd have to ban all Nazi flags and things of that nature if you did it as well, just so you couldn't be faulted for picking on one group.
