In the week since Saddam Hussein was hanged in an execution steeped in sectarian overtones, his public image in the Arab world, formerly that of a convicted dictator, has undergone a resurgence of admiration and awe.

As I said before, hanging Saddam was a huge mistake. He was piece of shit, but life imprisonment would have been the best thing for peace. Now you have a martyr.

I think the impact of Saddam's hanging is greatly overstated, both positively and negatively.

Besides, people who are looking for a reason to hate America will find one, regardless of how we deal with dictators. Arabs and other Muslims cognitive of human rights and general decency should understand that Saddam was a mass murderer. The way he died should not have any "martyr" effect for the rational Muslims.

Granted, shooting Saddam in the face with a shotgun might have had a less dramatic effect to it. They could have even got Cheney to do it.

I don't think too many Iraqis visit this forum. If you want to debate the issues of Saddam's hanging you would need to talk to them since they are the ones who tried, sentenced and executed him.

ATG owes allegence to noone except my family. I never thought my feelings about Bush could be so extremely negative.

Don't get him wrong. He is conservative, but he is not fool. I always respected ATG, in fact he is one of the persons in this forum I respect the most, even being in the other side of the street. He is a very clever and open minded person. I'm glad that people like him can give his viewpoints here. Unfortunately, he is one of the endangered species.

I'll agree that Saddam had balls, but what makes a man is far more than that.

I still believe the hanging was just, although I don't believe it was our duty to remove him from power (or to even help him rise to power, which we did a few decades ago).

+1 if I have any karma left to give today. Saddam was tried by the citizens of his nation and they decided his punishment. If the US military had wasted Saddam without handing him over to the Iraqis, I could start to see the martyr point. But your point would apply even then - those looking for a reason to hate America will find one.
