I was searching for some topics on the forums today, and I noticed the same consistent things when people ask questions.   Someone always replies, "Search first you idiot!"  They'll often go to great lengths to post links to other topics with the answer, far more work than actually answering or just ignoring it.   Generally, people are a lot meaner than they would be in person.

I started thinking about the internet in general, how things have really gone downhill.  Sure, it is a lot faster than when I dialed up on a 9.6 baud (I have even forgotten what that stands for) modem.  But back then, I never had to worry about going to a website and being bombarded with malware and ads.  Also, in forums people generally wrote well, and more respectful.

Fast forward to now, and we've seen the problems with no barriers to access.  The internet has generally become a pretty lewd place, where you constantly have to worry about all sorts of things.  In addition, the newer sites like dailymotion spew out smut with no checks.

Does anyone think that at some point the world will say enough is enough?  When I have kids, I will severely monitor their internet usage.  I've had roomates who can't handle the unlimited porn and waste their free time with it.  I don't think we as a species were meant to see so much of this junk... our minds evolved in one sexual paradigm where you simply weren't shown things you could not have.  I've seen how pornography can be a drug and I don't think unrestricted and unlimited access is a good thing for society.

The level of intellectual discourse is low; the web is being run by the lowest common denominator.  I am not in favor of storng controls, but I think the worst thing and the best thing about this all is its anonymity.  In a public place you wouldn't (hopefully not anyway) go up to a strange woman and ask to see her rack.

It is odd because I am in no way a Christian conservative; I am pretty liberal on a lot of things.  My main fear is that ads will take over my life.  Despite spam blockers I still have it streaming in - offers for breast enlargements (Im a dude...), mortgages, etc...

I've gotten to the point where I have said enough is enough.  I don't use the internet nearly as much as I used to, and I try to get ouside more.  I've lost weight and am much much happier as a person.  I see a future overrun by fat couch potatoes constantly self gratifying themselves to pictures of women they can never get.  Buddha said desire causes all unhappyness, but I believe that desire with no drive to satisfy it causes it.  The internet causes much desire while simultaneously making you less able to do anything about it.

Another internet needs to be formed I think.  One free of smut, free of people who only want to use the anonymity to insult, and free of all this malware junk.  The mature people of the world should unite and network out computers!!

Ok, I got that out of me, but seriously... does anyone else hate what has become of the internet?

I agree, but I think it's not just the Internet, it is a reflection of todays society as a whole.

Is it today's society or human nature?  I believe people are the same.  Modern people would act the same given ancient constraints.  I simply don't beleive our brains were meant to take some of the things the internet allows.  Porn is the obvious example....

Again I say this not pointing fingers.  I am a male, and I try very hard to avoid pornography.  Of course I've looked at it.  I've seen how it drives me into a "gotta get laid" frenzy.

I've never been as bad as a former roomate of mine; he discovered internet porn and really went to town with it.  I visited him after we have moved apart and his whole life was porn.

Now there's internet gambling.  Now they can take the ignorant masses' money too.

I guess my point is... I've spent too much time in my life on computers.  I've curtailed it a lot and discovered theres a whole world out there that is a lot better.  I've met a lot of people (my neighbor plays too much RPG's... 8 hours a day) who get consumed by it and don't realize what it is costing them.
