My family was a bit bad I guess...

My grandfather was ranked equivalent to a Major General in western standards back when the communists were rising in China. He killed many innocent Chinese people and also buried and tortured lots of Japanese. He was one of the officers that served under Mao.

My aunt was one of the major scientists that worked in the labs in China where they constructed the first nuclear weapons

Allegedly I am a descendant of Robert Burns, the famous Scottish poet.  The family achievement I am most proud of though is my Grandfathers POW camp escape in WW2.  He literally walked out of the front gate - the daring bastard! Although I guess after being put up against a wall to be executed by firing squad,  walking out of a gate doesn't seems too frightening (obviously he wasn't shot, his captors allowed him to live as they were amused by the fact he was such an awkward bastard and wouldn't do as he was told).  I still have the photo that was taken of him up against that wall - you can see the bullet holes and bloodstains left from previous executions.  Yet his expression is one of pure defiance without a trace of fear.  Brave guy.....

I'm not particularly proud of him, but it is what it is, and its something rather amazing about my family.

Makes one wonder how I was able to develop independant beliefs that have nothing whatsoever to do with
theirs.

You can pick your friends, but you can't pick your family.

When I was younger, I kept it a big secret. I'm an adult now with my own family and secure enough to say; hey everybody, my dad's a freak, check him out.

I can claim quite a lineage, but I assure you none of that greatness is of my quality yet.

The most famous, perhaps, would be my ancestor John Pym, the leader of the English Parliament during the Short and Long Parliament of 1640 and 1642. Pym led Parliament in deconstructing many of the powers King Charles I had given himself, including removing the Star Chamber (a secret court). When Charles attempted to arrest Pym and four other leaders of Parliament, they fled to London, returning to fight the English Civil War against the Royalists. Pym secured much of Parliament's finances and the vital alliance with the Scots. He was undoubtably leader of Parliament, and would have been Lord Protector if he had not died during the war. Oliver Cromwell took that post. Many historians call him 'King Pym' for his power and influence in his attempts to fight the dictator Charles I. Pym was buried in Westminster Abbey, but was removed after the Restoration of the monarchy in 1660.

"To have printed liberties," Pym once said, "and not to have liberties in truth and realities, is but to mock the kingdom."

Less famous, but perhaps more prestigious, would be that of the Mathew family line. While I do not bear that name, I am descended from them. A number of famous Englishmen and Welshmen belong to that family. Several were generals; Sir David Mathew saved the life of Edward I, future king, during the War of the Roses. Another was a saint. I cannot remember more of the individuals, but most importantly, the Mathew line is descended from the Welsh kings, and the kings of Britain, in the post-Roman period. This line can be traced to at least 400 B.C., with not only royalty, but a Roman ancestor as well. According to legend, these kings of Britain (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_le … of_Britain) were descended from a Trojan prince, who came from Aeneas and gods of ancient Greece.
