President Bush quietly has claimed sweeping new powers to open Americans' mail without a judge's warrant.

"The [Bush] signing statement claims authority to open domestic mail without a warrant, and that would be new and quite alarming," said Kate Martin, director of the Center for National Security Studies in Washington.

"You have to be concerned," a senior U.S. official agreed. "It takes executive-branch authority beyond anything we've ever known."
Bush's action was not in the form of a bill which was passed by congress, but was rather via a signing statement, which Bush added to a bill after it had been approved by the congress. Wikipedia has more information on his controversial use of signing statements.

By the end of 2004, George W. Bush had issued over 108 signing statements containing more than 505 constitutional challenges. As of October 4, 2006, he had signed 134 signing statements challenging 810 federal laws.

No surprise.

"The ABA task force, chaired by prominent Miami attorney Neil Sonnett, cites research that Bush in his signing statements has collectively lodged more than 800 challenges to provisions of laws passed by Congress."

Apparently the only branch we need is the executive.

I think it went overboard awhile ago. Emails, then wiretaps, and now postal service.

It's time to watch this again.

I remember when Bush got elected, the media actually SAID they were gonna tear the administration down because they hated Bush for no reason. Here is a example. Quit acting like babies, quit crying because democrats aren't president so you gotta tear the one down in office now. Just stop, its getting democrats no where (the senate/house of representitives doesnt count ). FYI, Clinton eaves dropped on calls also, but no big deal, clinton is an angel.

The gov't has my SS#, my address, my birth certificate.

They don't need to go through my mail. They have everything they need to find what they need on me. If they suspect someone of terrorist activity and want to search thier mail, they need to get a fucking warrant. No reason why this needs to be changed. It is an unecessary change.

Things like this? That's why. It may seem corny...but it's true. Right now I am, honestly, afraid of the government invading my privacy.

I'm ready for my personal bioGPS chip Mr. Alberto Gonzalez.

Who deserves the blame for this?  GWB?  Alberto Gonzalez, the Attorney General?  The NSA?  Bush Administration as a whole?  Clearly this is not in the platform of the Republican Party, right?  Bureaucracy gone overboard as far as I'm concerned.  But hey, as long as one terrorist is caught using snail mail to send suspicious documents, its all good.

You know, I have nothing to hide and don't give two shits who reads my mail...matter of fact, feel free to pay any of my bills that you may come across.  But damn...this is going a little overboard.  Like Mason said, they have my SS#, birth certificate, military records and a whole host of stuff that can identify me or anyone else for that matter.  I'll be glad to turn over any other piece of information they may need if they just ask or obtain it through PROPER legal means.

Bush is such a dipshit.
