in need of a new gfx card - donations welcome

Hello evry1,

well i got about £120 to spend ... specs are:

-P4 w/ HT 531 3.0 Ghz Processor
-1.5 gig DDr400 PC3200 RAM
-80 gig SATA HD
-128mb ATI Sapphire Radeon X300
-HP Pavillion v50 15" CRT Monitor

So .... i was gonna get a TFT monitor but some of my clanmates said that i was better off getting a DVI compatible graphics card first ... then getting a DVI monitor rather than a VGA monitor.

Any ideas please?

Thanks, mitch212k

Without a doubt, i would go for a new gfx card, that x300 must lag like hell

Get a 7600gt or 7900gt

Save on the graphics card, see if you can obtain dual 6800GT's (SLi) and then you'll save money for a new monitor.

BAD idea, i'm sure 1 7600 or 1 7900 for that matter will bitch slap the fuck out of 2 6800's.

A 7900GT will, a 7600GT won't (7600GT only ranks a little above 6800 Ultra).

Shall we use the fact that he doesn't have a SLI Mobo? So he has to choose between a monitor and good graphics card. My opinion..first the Graphics Card then the monitor.

ok everyone ... evrybody seems to think that the graphics card would be better .... i have found these :

Teh Nvidia - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showprodu … =GX-019-BG

Teh ATI - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showprodu … =GX-115-SP

So, do these cards need seperate power supplies or will they just slot in where the X300 was previously?

also ... which card is better in your opinions????

Thanks for the help, mitch

The X1600 Pro is a piece of crap. They put 512mb memory to try to make you buy it....it's junk.

Get the 7600GT or one of the x800/x850 series.

nvidia ftw!  i had  a 1600pro and i wasn't to impressed.  get the nvidia, 7600gt if you can with another 512mb of ram to give you 2gb total.  no point in having a sweet monitor if you vid card blows.  i learned the hard way.

hear hear. the only problem is that a 7900 will put him out about around 120ish pounds. i spent 185 USD before rebates, and a good monitor will cost around the same.

Are you sure that you get a good monitor for this price?

isnt £120 close to $200? I just bought a $200 xfx 256mb 7900GT from newegg and its as if I replaced the whole computer. i highly recommend it. i can run oblivion with everything on high and get good fps.

And yes, the new video card will come with an adaptor so that u can plug your vga monitor into the dvi ports.
