Trick Question.

Knowing that metal expands as it gets hotter... (hopefully we can all agree on this) suppose you have a perfectly round, solid metal tube BAR in the shape of a doughnut. If you heated that metal doughnut up, would the space in the middle get larger or smaller as it gets hot?

This is not a very good picture but it's the best I could find. Imagine that this is made of solid metal.

edit: I should have said bar because "tube" implies hollow...that's not the trick though

Assuming the metal is heated evenly the ratio from side to side should remain constant and the hole will stay the same size.

when the metal exands, it exands in every direction - including horizontally - which increases the circumference of the doughnut hole...

of course.. this is my first guess, so If I'm wrong, I'll go away and think about it some more

google " heat shrink" tool holding.. you heat up the holder with the bore in it, and when it cools it clamps the milling cutter.

= bore diameter gets larger when the heat is applied, dunno about the doughnut shape !!

the radius expands making the hole larger (expansion angle 1) as the radius of the sides itself expand making the hole smaller (expansion angle 2) so it would stay the same (unless the rate of expansion of the two angles are different)
