PUNE, India —  Muslim women wearing the head-to-toe Islamic robe, or burqa, could be banned from shopping at jewelry stores in this western Indian city after a series of thefts carried out by burqa-clad robbers, jewelers said Thursday.

The Pune Jewelers Association has applied to police for permission to bar people who cover their faces from their stores, said association president Fattechand Ranka.

Ranka said the move comes after closed circuit cameras in stores showed that three recent thefts, each of jewelry valued at more than $8,500, were carried out by customers wearing burqas.

"Because of the burqa the police could not identify their faces," he said.

I'm sorry but a town named Pune is just hilarious.

I don't understand why they the owners allow the jewelry off the table if someone is wearing clothing that could easily conceal merchandise.

Its insured. They'll be fine. Alot of people don't agree with the Muslim religion, but not everyone wearing a burqa is a criminal. At the same time, he should be able to refuse service to anyone he pleases.  Its his business. Like a signon the door, burqa=no service.

Then again, if your wearing a body covering burqa, why buy jewelry? Who will see it?

I do not understand why the women are shopping.  They should be answering my customer support phone calls.

So why not institute a policy that jewelry cannot be handled by people who wear the burqa instead of banning them from buying.  You certainly do not want to lose a customer base.

I know we've had our disagreements in the past (we have, if you don't remember, all the better I guess), but that was hilarious.

They deserve it. You'd have to be pretty stupid to allow people who are covered from head to toe to get close enough to your jewelry, and then not watch they close enough. They were probably men anyway.

The key thing is that India has been against Muslims long before it became popular 6 years ago. Just trying to prevent another World vs Muslims debate. o_O

Well, the Muslims sure make it difficult to be friends with them, don't they?

Regardless, I'd put up a sign in my store that said, "No Burqa, no problem."

Wrong, he can't. That would be prejudice. Could I hang a sign on my door saying Muslim = No Service? Or Black = No Service? That would be just asking for a big hefty lawsuit...

Wearing a burqa is the same thing as wearing a helmet and buying something in a store.
