A while back my father was laid off (for an unjust cause too, he was doing excellent work) and was still able to get a well paying job afterwards, but one that put a lot of stress on him. It hindered time for spending with his family, and doing other things. This job generated enough stress and other emotions that it drove him to do the very thing you said you have tried to do. And I must say, its heart-wrenching to be part of the experience, whether it be you're a loved one, such as my case, or anything else. He is doing well now though and I wish the same to you.
This is hard for me to type because Ive never been in a situation such as yours, but, in the end you just have to cope with things, stay confident, and pull through.
