You've got it right there, I have never been close to death. I've seen my loved ones die, though.

Ironically enough, I have "Death before Dishonor" Tattood on my right forearm.  I guess there would be no specific instance for me. I would just rather die on my feet then live on my knees.

Interesting point. I have stared back at it (combat vet/ purple heart) and I can honestly say it is a terrifying experience. Although for me, I wasnt terrified until after the fact when I realized how close I really was to eating it. I guess training and adrenaline takes over but is it that way for eveyone? Who knows.

Seriously, thats the point of 1984, that when confronted with your worst fear (Room 101) you may betray everything to avoid it.

Fortunately, I've never been tested in that way.....
