Well, I just started reading Take Back the Right by Philip Gold.
Some of the statements he makes are very interesting, to put a fine point on it.

If this is true than it would affirm what I have suspected for sometime: that some 'conservatives' are opposing certain issues or methods without actually thinking about it.By the seventies, conservatism had adopted its more or less permanent stance: opposing the Left for the sake of opposing the Left. That conservatism would adopt such a negative approach need not surprise. It's part of what you do when you want to get funded and/or elected. But it would be many years before I realised it went deeper: that conservatism was context with the lowest common denominato; and that, in the end, conservatism would rather complain create.
