Well, I just started reading Take Back the Right by Philip Gold.

Some of the statements he makes are very interesting, to put a fine point on it.

By the seventies, conservatism had adopted its more or less permanent stance: opposing the Left for the sake of opposing the Left. That conservatism would adopt such a negative approach need not surprise. It's part of what you do when you want to get funded and/or elected. But it would be many years before I realised it went deeper: that conservatism was context with the lowest common denominato; and that, in the end, conservatism would rather complain create.

If this is true than it would affirm what I have suspected for sometime: that some 'conservatives' are opposing certain issues or methods without actually thinking about it.

Coming from a conservative this is very interesting indeed.

However, the exact same thing could be said about liberals. So in reality, both sides disagree with the other for the sake of opposition to some degree. If you truly disagree with someone on many levels, you are likely to disagree with other things you do not care about if he or she does care about them. Human nature

edit: the test is to see if someone can truly defend their ideas, and how they defend them however. If you say 'I thing george bush sucks' but can't really say why you are either disagreeing with him because people you don't like like him, or you heard he sucks. As i said, you believe what you hear without any proof, so human nature takes a large part in that sort of stuff

George Bush sucks... the Failure in Iraq shows that. Maintaining a presence there is costing hundreds of billions of dollars every year. Plus, he is attempting to decrease AND increase Iraqi dependance on Coalition troops - or at least he SAYS he's decreasing dependance, but increasing troop numbers will only INCREASE dependance.

What we should've done is pulled out at 'Mission Accomplished' and kept the soldiers offshore.

I think you are right. If I ever argue politics with a republican conservative and i hold a libel democratic view (which, is not what I am but in this case), the republican will always disagree and NO common ground can be found. They want everything to be exactly the way it has always been, because that is what they have been taught and what they know when they are in fact afraid of change.

by the way im pretty high. So if that didnt make sense, I'm sorry?

How can you ask whether someone's OPINION is true?

Can you provide the link, or at least copy+paste correctly? I can't really understand what "that conservatism was context with the lowest common denominato; and that, in the end, conservatism would rather complain create" means.

Some 'people' oppose certain issues or methods without actually thinking about it. It is not unique to one group of people.

Absolutely. There's a large portion of people on either side that don't understand the issues, but just like the fight. I believe many people learn their political beliefs from their family/friends and never try to question these or evaluate them to see if they make sense or not. The same thing happens with religion, but that's another conversation. People always square off and takes sides for one thing or another, regardless of whether it makes sense or not. We're social animals, it's in our nature to join a group and protect it.

Any point of view is going to have the group that has exhaustively studied the issues and come to a decision, the group that is (for some random reason) drawn to that side, and the group that holds the same opinions but doesn't know why, and the group that just doesn't like the other side. Yes, I'm sure I left some out, the moral of the story is don't be surprised when some of your friends don't have a good reason for siding with you. It's always going to happen.

Funny how you can't have a Liberal without a Conservative...for one would not know one's position without knowing their relationship to another so we should all be thankful for the other's point of view for it will allow us to see were we stand.

Party ID is what the majority of the populace in the states use as a sort of gauge for what they should stand for in terms of policy whether it be conservative or liberal. Makes voting a lot easier :S
