How many people here celebrate Christmas as the coming of Christ? Yet Christmas now a days is more like celebrate the coming of St.Nicholas (Santa Claus). Remember who gives the presents?

Is the original meaning of Christmas now lost?

For me who cares, I'm an atheist and Christmas now is like most holidays, too commercialised.

Commercialization can be a good thing. Look at how much business gets done in before and after holiday sales. Do you want a strong economy?

The history channel did a documentary about Christmas and its origins. It was very very interesting. If you are a Christian though, and believe Christmas originated because of the birth of Christ, ya might not wanna watch it, the FACTS might piss ya off.

Economically, it is a good thing.  Granted, Americans have never been shy about consuming....  even consuming more than they can really afford.

As most posts ended up with people shouting that G.W.Bush is a tosser and useless and that he is blame for the ills of the world, I would very much like to point out that he had NO part in the crucifying of Jesus.

Well as far as I know he didn't.

I think the commercialization is good for diversity. By distancing the religious aspect of christmas from the holiday for most people, you ease the acceptance of an enjoyable tradition by non-christians. The more acceptable the holiday is, the more we can all enjoy a festive time of the year.

For anyone that did not see the documentary on the History Channel...or if you haven't read the Divinci Code; Christmas, as with most Christian holidays, is a mix of Christian beliefs and Pagan celebrations.  Another example of this is Easter.  The following can be found at Easter Info:

Pagan tradition suggests that the name Easter is derived from Ostara or Eostre, the Anglo-Saxon Goddess of Spring to whom the month of April was dedicated.

Another Pagan tradition that can coincide with Easter is the vernal equinox or the Festival of Spring in March, which symbolizes the rebirth of nature following the cold days of winter.

Even today Pagan symbols live on in the celebration of Easter with the hare, a symbol of fertility, becoming the Easter Bunny and brightly decorated eggs which were originally used to represent the colors of the new spring. Eggs were also an important fertility symbol.

Quick Google searches should provide any further info you might be interested on for these subjects.  Just include the holiday name, history, and/or symbolism.  Interesting stuff.

BTW, just so everyone knows, Pagan DOES NOT mean Satanic.

Oh yeah, and in response to the thread starter, I am a Christian and I celebrate it as the coming of Christ.  I also celebrate it as a time of joy and thanks for what I have.  For me the exchange of gifts is just a bonus but it also involves some sacrifice for the ones you love.  The time and money taken to find the gifts that are given are just as important (if not MORE important) than the gift itself.  It truely is the thought that counts.

To some extent I think it has become over commercialized but in today's society that's bound to happen.  The real test is whether or not people remember why they are celebrating, and they will remember if they choose to.  I remember because I make it a point to remember and to be grateful for the sacrifice made for my salvation so to me, the commercialization only means a bigger percentage off at the "Holiday" sales.

Exactly my point Mastermom people do not know why they give out presents. Some fat guy in a red suit gives out presents, the meaning of Christmas is lost it shoud be called St.Nicks day or something. As for presents, to me when I give them out is what the fuck to buy especially as I am in a long term relationship, the stress is not worth it and neither is the endless queuing at the shops for a loaf of bread. It's like the world ends.
Oh and remember Santa Claus is St.Nicholas who was a Turk (or around that area) and not some fat grey haired bloke form darkest Lapland.
