I voted for BF2. I know that Mario was more significant for getting people first into video games, but BF2 really did revolutionize First Person Shooters.
Not really. If you want to credit Battlefield for that, you should credit BF1942. BF2 merely continues the tradition (with each subsequent release sold with more bugs than the predecessor).

Anyone who doesn't go with Mario has to be freaking insane. The sheer amount of marketing early on in the series gave a pretty hefty jump start to the industry and its popularity. Who voted Battlefield 2? You've gotta be joking. Mario introduced smooth scrolling. What did Battlefield introduce? Pussified miniguns and tanks that struggle over speedbumps?
I was looking at it more from a gameplay perspective, but yes, Mario was certainly more significant in monetary and cultural terms.
The question was just which game is the most important.
Certainly we could find a thousand different definitions for "important".
When I saw "important," I automatically associated it with video games in general, and not with which one I love the most. If I could select by "favorite," and not "most important," I'd chose all of the above.
Personally, my "omfg that's so awesome" game of all time has to be Thief II: The Metal Age. I know...I like single player. Other single player games had their ups and downs, but Thief is the only series that has kept me on my toes every second. I could go on listing the awesomeness of a hundred other games, but that's material for another thread.
