Another year is coming to a close. It's time to look back. What, for you, was the most significant event of 2006 (in terms of global or domestic current affairs)? Please expand on your selection. I will post mine later.

Democrats actually winning was the big shocker. Rummy quitting was the cherry on top.

After the Dems won, Halliburton subsidized a whole lot of thier business, but that was largely unreported. I'm not going to speculate why they did that. Keep it to my self.

Runner's up-

N. Korea nuke test

1-Israel leaving the West Bank and signing a peace treaty with Palestine, recognizing it as a country.
2-Israel giving money to Lebanon to rebuild its country.
3-Iran and Jordan recognizing Israel as a country.
4-Bush recognizing he made a mistake invading Iraq.
5-UN ending the civil war in Iraq.

Oh boy, that crack was good.

That wasn't a shocker. We all knew it was gonna happen.

I'd still prolly vote it as most significant, at least politcally.

1. North Korea testing the nukes

2.  the lebanon-israel war of 2006

3.  the attack on the shiite shrine which killed a whole lot of people and made sectarian violence the focus of all the news media in Iraq

The nation suddenly stopping and watching the James Kim story, and collectively evolving their sense of preparedness and rushing to the store to buy flares, radios, and GPS devices.

I suggest everyone just watch Man Vs Wild every Friday. My new favorite show. In each episode, this former British special forces guy (who also hiked up Everest and across the South Pole) parachutes into the middle of the Sierra Nevada, the French Alps, the Amazonian rain forest, etc with nothing but a knife, a flint, a water flask, and the clothes on his back, and a couple cameramen follows him for days (without assisting in any way) until he finds civilization.

Highlights from his venture on the African savanna: he couldn't find water so had to squeeze the "juice" from an elephant dropping directly into his mouth. later, he found a zebra that had been torn apart by lions, and proceeded to cut himself a massive hunk of flesh and ate it raw. Zebra sashimi.

Here's a tip: when you make a headdress out of your t-shirt to survive in the desert, be sure to piss on it.

Here's a mininova link for those interested.
