Do you see how fruitless and stupid it is to try and take his "challenge".....ANYTHING you post will be refuted by a similar tactic. Why bother?
I made a statement about other people's statements, asking them to back it up. Further, there is a difference between anti-American rhetoric on a forum which mostly discusses foreign policy and hating America. For example, I am not a fan of many of Germany's past actions, but I would love to visit the country.lowing wrote:

This is the way I see it:
a) The USA suffers a disproportionately large number of critical threads and posts.
b) Many of these posts are not in actual fact true 'USA-bashing' but in fact genuinely meant and rationally thought out comments on US foreign policy. The reason the US draws so many posts and not other countries is because it projects its power outside of its own borders far more often than any other nation. Even Americans post threads critical of US policy abroad so it can hardly be deemed 'US-bashing' or 'Anti-US' as they share a role in the direction the USA should take on the international stage (as voters).
c) Some of the posts on the forum are retarded generalisations drawing on stereotypical images of Americans and America.
d) The retarded posts and volume of posts about USA in general have increased the sensitivity of many Americans on the forum who view themselves as hated by all (a very incorrect assumption). Many have developed a persecution complex. It draws many into making assumptions about some peoples opinions that is shaded by all the retarded guff that gets posted. For instance, if I state something critical about US policy in Iraq I then get labelled 'pro-Saddam' by some retard - that's a symptom of the siege mentality some Americans have begun to suffer from.
e) I urge Americans to overlook and ignore the blatantly stupid and frankly racist comments about Americans and deal with the proper 'debate and serious talk' posts in a calm and rational manner. Lighten up.

Actually, I think lowing has a point there, Bubbalo. If your statement is, that America is not being bashed more in this section than any other country, then it should be your responsibility to prove it. Not ours.
If you can back it up, then you should go ahead and do so.
But instead of doing that, you are asking the others to back up their statements ( that america is actually being bashed more than any other country in here ) to prove your own statement wrong ( or right, if they fail ). Tricky, I'll admit that, but not quite fair, don't you think ?
Both parties should try independently of each other to prove their own statements right.
And btw, bub, I like debating classes as much as the next guy, but as you have said yourself, even if one is the better debater, he can still be wrong. You are good with words, but you are not always right.
This is no debating class. There are no trophies to be won, or points to be gained.
If soemeone doesn't feel like backing up his opinion with facts, then that's just fine. Both can be discussed, regardless of the outcome.
There is no "winning a debate" on the internet.

I will speak for myself here.........I am not "sensitive" about what others on this forum think of America, or me for that matter. The only problem I have about it is, trashing all aspects of America seems to be the convenient reason for all the problems in the world and it is a stupid, cheap and inaccurate debate tactic and it is tiresome. The problems in the ME were there long before the US ever existed. So to blame the US for it is pretty much ridiculous. That being 1 example.CameronPoe wrote:

You also have to admit, my analogy on how Bubbalo conducts his debates is pretty much right on the money.

And speaking for myself I will say that trashing all aspect of America for 'all the problems in the world' is pretty stupid and not to mention counter-productive, credibility-wise. On an issue by issue basis, I state my case and support said case with the reasons that made me draw my conclusions, nothing more or less.lowing wrote:

That statement is being made as a challenge to the numerous other people who have started threads referencing America-bashing.B.Schuss wrote:

Nor is it fair that they make all sorts of ridiculous claims about others beliefs. And it isn't just limited to this. All the time people are stating my case for me, and getting it completely wrong.B.Schuss wrote:

What? You are drawing a correlation between someone who hates cold desserts hating ice cream, and someone who hates America. I then drew out your comment to find the corollary for cold desserts.lowing wrote:

No, I am strongly opposed to most or all of American foreign policy. I also, personally, disagree with parts of their domestic policy. I don't hate America or it's residents: I just take a different view on some issues. Same as I don't hate my father yet we disagree on many issues.lowing wrote:

You have to come prepared to those and work under pressure. This my friend is called Google debating. Which essentially means no matter how crazy your view is you can always find something to back it up on the Internet. We had no computers in debate class, just notes.
I did feel lucky to get Bubbalo to concede these as bashing though .

We didn't get class time...........we were also often underprepared..........it helped that the draws were random, and the other teams were..........not entirely capable. The really good ones were the teams from expensive private schools, whose teachers wrote their speeches for them. As soon as you hit secret topics, they crumbled.Kmarion wrote:

Agreed, but I am just trying to show you where this idea of American bashing is coming from. I understand it is more political than personal.

For the most part I agree with your opinion here except for the fact that the people here on the forum only represent a small portion of the world population, but their opinions mirror the sentiment of the rest of the world, and the number of anti-America opinions seem to be constantly growing, even within our own borders. You can argue that it's not the US that you dislike, it's just the pres/government/military/policy, but a lot of other people aren't as educated and they see that as the US.lowing wrote:

As for our part, we're the bad guy when we try to step in and help, and we're scum when we just sit back and let something happen. The rest of the world turns to us when there is conflict any where. No one else is willing to step up and stick their necks out. The UN is pretty much ineffective, so when they fail the rest of the world goes and hides while the US steps up and not only says something is wrong, but we do something about it.
And besides... we're just following in the footsteps of our ancestors. You think countries were happy when the Spanish/British armadas showed up? Ghengis Khan probably wasn't met at the border with a welcome sign and flowers. But I liken us to the Romans of old. The Romans, would not only reach out and take over, but they would also leave their influence. They built wonderful things, established local governments I'm sure at the time they were not welcomed.
Also... how many other countries provide funds to re-build what they've destroyed? The US is pumping so much money into Iraq right now to help the people. Are any other countries doing that? Hell no, your governments are just sitting back and shaking their fingers at my government and telling you they would never do anything like this. That would be political sucide. And your government and the media tell you what bullies we are and the sheep buy into it.
And, if what the US is doing is so wrong, why have no other governments done anything to stop it? Why not send your troops to defend the poor, poor people making IEDs and killing our troops? Israel too, if they are so evil why have your governments not sent their troops to defend the Palestinians?
So you go on ahead, bash the US. Make fun of us, who cares. Eventually you will have some catastrophe and we'll try to forget all this when you show up crying on our doorstep. We won't turn you away, we'll invite you in, throw on a pot of coffee and break out the check book.

Too true, this is only a very small representation of what is the "world's" opinion of America. And even here everyone is being influenced, hence me writing this!

Good, I hope a goverment would help to rebuild a country after it had exhiled a dictatorship. As for other countries not doing anything, hmm, UK? Another point here is that yes you are re-building countries, but American people and English are doing the work? Therefore the money is going back into the countries carrying out that work.

Bubs, this thread needs some help. First, you should have defined what "america-bashing" is, or perhaps just define exactly what "proof" is that someone hates america.
For example, some liar said I hate america today. Obviously this unlearned loser has no clue what I actually think about this country having gained his opinion from some other clown who said "ironchef hates america and us soldiers, blah blah blah" when in fact I've never said it. yet somehow, that notion will permeate the minds of the idiots that have little reading comprehension...and i'll go on thus labelled...even though there's very positive posts from me that obviously show my love for this country, it's torn and battered constitution, it's neglected, overtaxed and propaganda-laden people, etc, etc.
Now to address your OP.. I think I've seen some kids post now and then that used decisive wording to suggest they actually hate our country. I doubt they meant it or could even support it, but it's been said. As for people like lowing, usmarine2007, and other yahoos who can't read well, it is apparent that their disagreement with someone's 'criticism' of aspects of our country, our policies, our leaders, and other ills harbored in the USA are considered an open attack on and "proof" that someone hates the USA. It's hard to ignore their BS, and it's impossible to argue with them (as shown above), so i think just letting them say their unqualified beliefs should just go without comment when possible.

Do you mean that when an American comes on here and makes a statement, we can assume that the rest of the USA mirrors the sentiments within that statement? Like this guy...silo1180 wrote:

well, it still is your statement, wether it was meant as a challenge or not. You cannot ask others to back up their statements and at the same time refuse to back up yours.Bubbalo wrote:
That statement is being made as a challenge to the numerous other people who have started threads referencing America-bashing.B.Schuss wrote:
Actually, I think lowing has a point there, Bubbalo. If your statement is, that America is not being bashed more in this section than any other country, then it should be your responsibility to prove it. Not ours.
Well, I guess there is a multitude of possible reasons for that:Bubbalo wrote:
Nor is it fair that they make all sorts of ridiculous claims about others beliefs. And it isn't just limited to this. All the time people are stating my case for me, and getting it completely wrong.B.Schuss wrote:
But instead of doing that, you are asking the others to back up their statements ( that america is actually being bashed more than any other country in here ) to prove your own statement wrong ( or right, if they fail ). Tricky, I'll admit that, but not quite fair, don't you think ?
a) you have a certain way of putting things so complicated, that others just cannot follow your argumentation, including the use of elaborate rethorical means.
b) the others are stupid, you are the only intelligent person here
c) everybody is after you, because we all hate you.
d) it's the internet. communication mishaps occur all the time. lighten up.
personally, I think it's a combination of a) and d)
The reason why you were getting that ice cream analogy in there appears to be to make an assertion that if you hate certain ingredients you automatically hate the resulting food. I can see why it would be useful for you to try and make that argument, as on these forums there are plenty of legitimate criticisms of many of the ingredients used in the current flavour of American Pizza but very few serious and sweeping condemnations of the entire pie (except for the odd trollish remark from characters who don't pop up that often). You are insistent that hating ingredients means you hate the result, but that analogy simply doesn't hold true.lowing wrote:
Ahhhhhhhh I got it now, you don't hate America........You just hate everything ABOUT America........how stupid of me to misunderstand you.
Assuming "America" is a pizza, most of the ingredients that some of the people on this forum hate are just toppings added by certain groups who then insist that their version is the only way to eat pizza, but these toppings can be easily picked off and discarded without the need to throw away the whole dish. In fact, if you were to add the toppings of many of the political factions onto the same pizza, it would make you sick. Once you have discarded the toppings you don't like which were added by a particular political brand, you can still love the pizzery flavour.
But there may still be some people who express a dislike of some of the core ingredients when eaten raw. For instance, I wouldn't want to eat a whole tin of tomato puree, or chow down on freshly ground flour. But again, pointing out the flaws in Proportional Representation brand yeast doesn't mean that you hate the pie, or don't think it's basically a good idea but could be improved a little. And when those people are working in the pizza-factory, those suggestions for improvements can also be constructive without making them pizza-haters, as some people seem to believe.
Of course, there will be a few who just hate pizza, despite the fact that many of them have never tried pizza and haven't even looked up the ingredients before making up their mind. In fact, if many of them did try some pizza and tasted all the variations of toppings various groups are pushing, they would probably realize that they just didn't like the sound of one of the varieties. Such people are in a minority, and I don't think of any of the long term forum member fall into that category. But there is more hatred for the pizza-haters than they could ever bring against the pizza-makers through sheer proportional size of the two groups.
Clearer?
