Served in the USAF for 8 years, was a 1N251 (formerly a 20752 but they changed it while I was in and I think they've changed them again since I got out in 1997).  1N251 was HF-Non Morse Printer Systems Operator (basically it's HF intelligence collections).  Spent 9 months on NCC Corry Station (horrible little Navy Base in P-cola, FL) for my tech training.  Totally sucked, everyone from my flight in basic were going to Keesler, staying at Lackland or some other USAF base, but I got sent to a Navy station for my school.  Thought I had done something wrong and was being punished!

Went to Misawa, Japan and get bumped up from HF to satellite comms.  Spent a few years there then got sent back here to San Antonio, worked in the Medina complex, turned up the satcom collection, proved it was worth full funding and watched it grow.  Spent some time in Southern Arizona supporting Border Patrol and our troops in Latin/South America.

Got out because I couldn't stand the stupid politics of trying to promote.  I just wanted to do my job, wasn't interested in kissing anyone's ass so I could get ribbons for points towards promotion.

I agree with GorillaTiCTacs... if you can get a Top Secret or above clearance go for it.  You find out a lot of interesting stuff, and I can say the times I got to interact with Delta Force or the Combat Control guys were a blast.  But it's not easy to get the clearance!

For you (actual) ex-military peeps... anyone know why most military installations have a golf course?  The answer will freak you out!

maybe artillery ranges that have been too pock marked and used so maybe they pave a course over it right....and what do we usually find in old artillery ranges, UNEXPLODED ORDINANCE.   so UXO's in a golf course, maybe?

If they post alot of random numbers that make no sense whatsoever to me:

Served in the USAF for 8 years, was a 1N251 (formerly a 20752 but they changed it while I was in and I think they've changed them again since I got out in 1997).  1N251 was HF-Non Morse Printer Systems Operator (basically it's HF intelligence collections)
I'll be more than happy to believe them out of sheer, utter confusion.

Wrong on all your guesses so far... UXOs would make golf a lot more intersting though!  Bet it would cut back on the divets!

They still using that pile of shit SA80 then. have they fixed the magazine ejection, we were one of the first battalions to use that in NI, we had to tie a bit of string to the magazine so we did not lose it if we banged against the button to eject the magazine LOL. and that is not the kind of thing about a weapon you will find on Google i don't think, only if you have used it.

1st battalion queens regiment just in case you wanted to know 10 years, mind you they do not exist anymore.

And what does amaze me about people that say they are in the forces, is that they seem to get a lot of time off to play games if you look at some of there stats.

looking at the map it's smack dead in the middle here, with residential and warehousing on all side of it, so i can't really see any geographical advantage, it's not even close enought to the flight line to serve as any kind of backup mustering field, and getting fuel out there wouldn't be fun

oooh, good one, i thought maybe evac field for choppering out people, but that didn't make much sense when you've already got a runway a couple miles long

anyways, i give up, i got work orders to do, i'll check back tonight

edit:

OOOOO OOOOO oooOOOOOOOOOO

for making a refugee tent city, makes sense with it being already in the middle of the residential area here, with the schools, hospitals and stuff all around

In an effort to avoid being accused of high-jacking a thread...

According to my friend in USAF CE... "most major military installations have land set aside for burial grounds in the event of another major war.  Instead of just letting that land sit, most facilities use it as a golf course."

Now to put this thread back on track... I have a co-worker that claims he's a vet because his DEP contract expired before the USAF could provide an opening in his guranteed career field.  He walked away, but claims he has the same benefits as me having served 8 years.  So when our mgmt lets us off early for Vet's day he leaves with us... [smoldering thinking about it]

I have glasses that I need to see CLEARLY, I don't need my glasses to see and I can read a chalkboard from 30 feet usually w/o squinting. Is eyesight like that going to land me a shitty job in the military? What about if I get laser eye surgery does that count as still having bad vision? Thx thx thx

as far as i know, no.  youll get issued birth control goggles and perhaps get corrective laser eye surgery once you get into your unit, if you request it.  only thing that will really bar you from a certain MOS is if your color blind.  dont take my word for it though, i have been known to be quite the barracks lawyer back in the day...

You'll need 20/20 if you want to be a pilot and a college edumacation, other than what Gunslinger pointed out, it doesn't matter if you wear coke bottle glasses just as long as you aren't color blind.
