Sober enough to know what I'm doing, drunk enough to really enjoy doing it
I saw the real demonstration a long time ago. Given the fact that the US is a hyperpower it makes us a target for different reasons. Without security the rest of the stuff could be pointless. Education spending doesn't matter when there are bombs falling on schools.(Extreme example) This is not to say that our spending is unbalanced, but never underestimate the importance of defense spending. Perhaps if we didn't pay for 1/4 of all UN programs we could devote more money into feeding our children.

If we're an equal contributer to the UN, how are we going to get our way everytime?

I always assumed the US federal budget was like that, but i have never seen it in such simple terms. It is a little concerning, unfortunately im not a US citizen.
What people also fail to realize is that the US federal budget also affects the rest of the world, if the US put another $20 billion into researching alternative sources of energy other then high pollutants then global warming and other universal issues would not be so large.
I’m not saying the US is responsible for anything nor should it be held liable, I’m just suggesting that such a dominate superpower should be leading the change, and I feel we should be seeing more progress from a country with obviously allot of extra cash.
nice find King_County_Downy, +1 for you my good sir

His numbers appear to be way off. I know in 2003 we spent $13.3 billion tax dollars in direct Foreign Aid. I'll look for a more recent number.

Yeah but they aren't talking about taking away a ton of money from the defensive/offense from the pentagon, and the only real reason we're a target is because we get involved in world affairs where we don't need to be..Kmarion wrote:

true majority is just another front organization for the many-times-failed communist party
But wait if everyone joined the military because that's where all our tax money goes to, isn't that a Communism?

That may be the case. So maybe we need that kind of spending to defend ourselves against mistakes we may have made. In any sense that doesn't mean you stop spending money on defense.cpt.fass1 wrote:

Nobody said stop spending money on it, they said take 5 billion from 40 billion for other services?
Also lets all remember The Star Wars program? A web of "lasers" that would act as a net to catch missles? Now that technology wasn't available and that cost was rediculasly inflated? I'm sure they're alot of programs like that, that can be cut?

most of the money is spent on tech and weapons research, not necessarily payroll, and military spending often ends up in the private sector, if all of our weapons and gear were developed by the government as opposed to private sector we'd have gear like russia and chinacpt.fass1 wrote:

Sorry what I meant was stop spending what congress has deemed the "appropriate amount". I am just trying to offer a little clarity like i originally said"This is not to say that our spending is unbalanced". If you really want to blow your mind check this out.cpt.fass1 wrote:

if you never start the research in the first place the tech will never become availablecpt.fass1 wrote:

Not really. Given the massive waste at the Pentagon, that money could come from simple oversight and better verification.Kmarion wrote:

The money they take out of taxing cigarrettes alone could probably pay for the education programs in question. I pay about $6/pack now. I'm sure they don't cost more than a dollar per pack to manufacture.
Being a single white male, I pay more taxes than any other taxable group in the nation. I'd really like to see some of that money go towards some other than failed mass-transit projects and $5,000 chairs at the government branch offices. There's so much money wasted it makes me sick.

That has nothing to do with it. The US gets their way because of a security council Veto.King_County_Downy wrote:

In fact since UN contributions are supposed to be done as a percentage of GNP, the US contributes almost the least to the UN.
Defence overspending is something the US is definately guilty of. There is no reason for those levels of military expenditure, the cold war is over in case you guys hadn't noticed.
They haven't. That or they are incredibly paranoid.Bertster7 wrote:

most education is handled by the citizen's respective states, how convenient for ben to leave that part out
and downy, you don't really think they spend 5000 on office chairs do you? how do you think the f117 and b2 got financed?

I'll try to dig up an article I saw a while back. It was about Washington State wasting money on stuff like that. If I remember correctly, they were paying bills for office furniture that was outrageous! Butyeah, they bought like 300 chairs for over $5,000 a piece.kr@cker wrote:

If you're trying to prove the Pentagon don't waste money, the F117 and B2 are not the best things to use as examples.kr@cker wrote:

I think thats our first strike aircraft. They were used extensively in the first gulf war. Not to say I am arguing they don't waste money. The entire government does.. no secret there.Bertster7 wrote:

Right, without our nuclear bombs we'd be totally defenseless, in fact, our security is a direct function of the number of bombs we have, the more bombs, the more secure. So spend spend spend! Who cares if our dollar is on the verge of collapse and fiscal policy in great need of reforms, as long as we have bombs we can FORCE the oil suppliers to support our dollar so we can afford more bombs to drop on them! Ingenious, right?kr@cker wrote:

Or, we could introduce social reforms, welfare, reallocation of government held M1 to consumers with the highest propensity to consume and a passive fiscal policy supportive of automatic stabilizers and long-term health coupled with a monetary policy that leaves no room for inflation. But that would mean taking money from the greedy absurdly rich and from the paranoid warmongers.
Here's one link...still trying to find the one about the chairs...not like it's relevant comparatively speaking http://www.heritage.org/Research/Budget/bg1840.cfm
