American Center for Law and Justice FTW!

Excerpt:
As this case was filed in federal court, the American Center for Law and Justice represented school officials. I wanted to make sure that the ACLU’s censorship attack would not be successful, and I am happy to report that at the program last week, students sang “Away in a Manger” in the presence of three lawyers and no additional legal action has been taken. But isn’t it ridiculous that three lawyers had to monitor what fifth and sixth graders would be singing at the school’s event? Have we reached a point in our culture where students singing a song that some might disagree with can now become a basis of censorship? For all the ACLU’s talk of championing freedom of speech, they certainly weren’t championing the freedom of speech of these students. The good news is that reason prevailed and the song was sung.

Would you feel the same way about this if the kids wanted to sing a song for Ramadan? What about if they wanted to sing a song praising the KKK?

Yes, sing a song for Ramadan by all means, but during the season of Ramadan, not Christmas.  Sing a song praising the KKK? Gimme a break, this isn't 1950 in Alabama.

Btw, I'm not trying to start anything, just asking a rhetorical question. Someone's going to be offended no matter what people do, so everyone should just chill a little and learn to let a few things slide. As long as they're not hurting anyone, who cares what they want to sing.

As many of you already know, I'm not a Christian by any means.  However, I'm gonna have to agree with Stingray.

What's the harm in a freaking song?

I'll say it again...  I have nothing against public displays of religion.  As long as the religious stay out of my personal business (like not making laws based on their religion), I don't care if they have some songs to sing.

It's the secular reactionary stuff that is really hurting the image of secularists.  Of course, it wasn't atheists that forced that tree to be removed from the Seattle airport recently.  A rabbi was responsible for that....

If the kids parents do not want to let their kids to sing the song, send a note explaining why.  I am for the teacher would understand, and make other arrangements.  If you are offend by the song, do not go to the program.  Just like if you are offended by something on TV, or the radio, you change the station.

If Jews want a program for Hananaka (sp?) or the Muslims for Ramadan, then let them.  If I had children that I did not want to take part in the program, I would tell the teacher that.  I would also make for sure that i did not show up, if the programs offended me.

Amen to that...  (no pun intended)

I'm more partial to "O, Come All Ye Faithful" and "Hark, the Herald Angels Sing" than "Away in a Manger." I mean that song just sucks so much.

Don't like it, don't listen to it. Congratulations on your victory over political correctness.

The first two are better written songs, but "Away in a Manger" is a good song for the kids to sing.  Melody isn't hard and the words are easily remembered.

Finally, a ruling on this subject involving some common sense.  Oh, and since I know that sooner or later someone is going to come on here and say that the judge was wrong and the school shouldn't have been allowed to do the song, "freedom of religion" does not mean "freedom from religion".  Basically can believe what you want to with out having the belief of others imposed upon you.  As many others here have said, if you don't want to do something because of your beliefs a simple note will do, no law suits required.
