I heard somewhere that New Zealand has the worst Gang trouble in the world in Aukland and Wellington. Is this true?? I remember there was a film, we were warriors, wasn`t that about it all?Pubic wrote:
A history lesson of sorts.
Like pretty much every other white-dominated country outside of Europe, there was a native population here that were fucked on by the colonists. In this case they are a polynesian race know as the Maori. The Maori migrated to New Zealand (Aotearoa, in the Maori language) between the 8th and 13th centuries. The coming of the white man bought more warfare and disease to the already-warring Maori tribes. Despite this, there were also some benefits realised with time, such as technology and the elimination of slavery.
Peace was made, via the Treaty of Waitangi (founding document of New Zealand), although the treaty has been the subject of controversy at times, as there are many differences between the english and maori language versions.
Though there has been bitterness at times, the reconciliation process has been remarkably civilized compared to other such countries, with large cultural and financial compensation being given to the Maori by the New Zealand government. The two cultures have mixed well, and Maori culture and language has seen something of a revival lately.
There are some in New Zealand who believe that the Maori were not the first people to arrive in New Zealand, and that Chinese and even Celtic explorers have made it here before. Whilst little evidence presents itself, some archaelogical discoveries, the most recent of which was the discovery of a supposedly 2500-year skeleton in a cave on the shores of lake Taupo. Additionally, a small number of people claim multiple there items and sites which prove Celtic peoples lived in New Zealand before the Maori. There is a minimal, almost non-existent amount of media coverage devoted to the idea of a non-Maori "first discovery".
So yeah, basically the British colonized New Zealand and fucked up the natives, but theres a small chance they might not be natives. Meh.
Doubt it, our gangs dont even have guns most of the time, same goes for the cops, they only just got tazers! Once Were Warriors had a bit to do with gang trouble but it was more about domestic violence; wife beaters and shit...the main guy even ended up doing the right thing in a twisted way, wasting a kiddyfiddler with a broken bottle! Its kind of like NZ's version of trainspotting...actually both of those movies would be in me top 5...SwampDog wrote:
