Been having artifact problems after about ten minutes of play of late in my #2 PC. It's a ATI x800XL. I cleaned out all the dust thoroughly. Re installed and same problems after @ ten minutes. My question is..What is the lifespan of the average video card? All temps are within norms. Do they just burn out? This one is two years old in a PC that only gets played half as much as my XPS 3, which is almost 3 years old. I did buy a ATI 1950 pro to replace it though.

Try different drivers...

I was getting some really odd artifacts after installing Nvidia's new drivers. I went back to an older set and it worked fine. Still getting shitty fps but thats another story alltogether....

Maybe try rolling back your ATI drivers?

Did you overclock it?

Have you checked if the fan is not broken, so its not overheating?

i got my X800GTO for almost a year now, running heavely overclocked and never had any problems with it...

It does not seem that the video card is burned out because then it would not work from the first min, instead of waiting 10 min before screwing it up...

You could try to use Ati tray tools to downclock the card, see if it still artifacts.

ati tool is a download on guru3d.com and has temp and fan monitors IF your card allows and you can overclock it

I had an x800GTO², burnt out after 9 months. I did do some overclocking every now and again but by only 15 or so Hz. Began seeing artifacts in games, mainly in the sky for Bf2. After a few more days I got things like rainbow coloured roads and the screen would got blurry with black dots all over it. Then I started getting artifacts in the bios settings for the mobo and on the desktop, shortly after it died completely.
Try what the others have said, monitor temps, drivers etc and see if that fixes it. If they don't solve the problem and you begin seeing more artifacts especially on the desktop then your card may be on its way out.

Thanx guys. Just got home from work. I'll try drivers tomorrow. The PSU is a 1 year old Antec Neo Power 480. I think it should be fine.

I'd say if the roblem starts after 10 minutes that it's a heating problem. Are you sure your temp gauge is working correctly ? Personally, I'd try to check the fan/heat emmanation if possible. Artifacts are usually either not a problem, or pretty consistently a problem (burned mem). Having the problem start up after 10 minutes seems too much of a coincidence. Then again, if you've already replaced the card, then the point is rather mood, isn't it ?

Well I had an PNY 6600gt which lasted me over a year before I sold it.
Then I had a PNY 6800gt which burned, did not even overclock it. Lasted about 6 months.

Well tried ATI Tool and tried various drivers. It now has artifacts from the get go. Even at low settings. Temps are all normal. It's just toast I guess. Any way now I need to find the x1950 Pro power connector that came with my PSU. Where did I put that...

Hey guys just installed my new 1950 pro. Actually did a Xp reinstall to start fresh. Everything was fine until i installed the 1950 pro disc. Loaded up the new cat control center drivers and such. Reboot the PC. Windows starts to load and then the screen goes black. PC is running, but the screen goes to sleep. Any ideas? I'm off to work so hopefully when I get back you smart people will have some remedied to try. Thanks in advance!

Are you sure your graphics ports isnt overclocked via volatges?

try another reinstall with your new card, but this time dont install the drivers from the disk, put up with vga mode for a few mins and download the newest driveres from the ati website, maybe they will work right

hope it helps

Well, all is better...for now. I took my x800xt out of My Xps3, put it in my #2 'built" pc. And then put the new x1950pro in the Xps3. Everything is great. Love the 1950pro so far. Guess my mobo didn't like the newer card.

Overclocked every card I have ever owned and have yet to burn on out.  I got a voodoo 5500 from 1999 that still works

I would have to say temps are high (I know you said they were fine, perhaps your temps are showing wrong numbers).

When gpu's go they go, no worky.
