Actually, you can take it back farther than that... Most religions that exist today began as oral traditions, so who knows what the original version of the stories was like? Not all of the Bible was like this, but most of the earliest chapters (like Genesis) were orally passed down before they were written.liquix wrote:
I would argue that if God's will ever existed it was written out long ago in the hundreds of Biblical translations. Nobody here has read the "original" Bible/Koran/Torah. Given the enormously corrupt people who controlled Europe during the times that the Bible was translated into: Greek/Italian/Latin/Deutsch/English/French/Portuguese, or what have you, they ALL put their little spin on things. I believe the Bible is also another fault in western religion, how can it be true when there are umpteen million versions of it? And just to prove those wrong who believe the message cannot/ has not changed just think about how much a single punctuation mark, or a single word can change a sentence:Turquoise wrote:
That's a very important distinction. I would agree that religion is the cover that people use for immoral actions oftentimes. So technically, they're not acting in accordance with God's will, they're just telling themselves they are since that makes it easier for them to do the act.DesertFox423 wrote:
I, on the contrary, began to feel better and better about my religion and very upset when people came on forums like this saying "There is no god. God is weakness" etc. since it just made me angry. I must reiterate though, I firmly believe you cannot say religion is THE main factor in the less than honorable moments of human history and other factors are far more at work under the guise of religous action. My religion has helped me greatly know myself better and develop my opinions on life. Thus, the ultimate goal after leading a good life that is rich in religion is heaven.
Sadly, this guise works remarkably well among less educated people. Look at the bullshit people do under Islam's guise in Iraq.
Heaven as we understand it today means the abode of God, the angels, and the souls of those who are granted salvation.
The word heaven as originally intended means "sky."
That should show even the power of a single word and how it can change everything.
In addition to this, you can factor in the influence of surrounding cultures. For example, there is a lot of evidence that Zoroastrianism heavily influenced both Judaism and Christianity. So, who knows how much of each religion is just social context rather than metaphysical "fact", so to speak?
If you can ask this question then you are smart enough to work out the answer...
Religion was used by the governing bodies of the world to bring the people into line and make them start to think that there were embodier consequences for actions...
The Romans were the first to combine them all into one god and one set of rules to follow and began the link with politics, state government... what have you...
So you make up your mind if you want to follow the old man in the Micky Mouse costume and maybe there is something out there...
Who knows...
That's the point...
There giving you false hope, faith in something and making money out of your insecurities...
Do you think that's right...
And then they go around using it to molest little church boys...
There wrong man and I don't understand how you can build a belief structure on something as inflexible as written 'word' when they don't even touch on some of the things that would be relevant to peoples lives...
It's about GOD...
I don't wanna go to hell and I think I'm a good person...
I care about other people and what they think and all of that but don't try and brain wash me with that stuff...
good luck with this:)

i'd leave karma if i could how many posts do you need
Funny, I was reading figures for the recent census here, about 1.3 million of NZ's 4.3 million people ticked "Non-religious", the highest proportion yet...
I was raised a Christian, but from the ages of about 10 to 14 I abandoned it. I found questions that couldn't be answered, basic flaws (which some ten years later I found names for ) and unrelenting christian hypocracy.

Raised as a christian, didnt believe it when I was a kid, don't believe it now.

To be more detailed. In both churches, the sermon was "anything that keeps you from church is your god."
The preacher took things from the audience.
One lady said "BINGO!"
Priest says,"Money is your god"
Another guy say the "NBA Finals".
Priest says,"Ahhhh the N***** Ball Association"
Everyone laughs.
Except me and my brother. And there were black people in the church too.
I know what I believe and I choose to believe in myself. THe Adam and Eve comment was sarcastic.
At age 25 I am succesful in job, family, and finances to my satisfaction. And god had no part in any of it.
As I stated before, if the gates of hell are waiting for me, check me off the list cause Im coming in.
Making jokes or sarcastic references to a persons heritage is insulting, regardless of who it is, where its said, or how its said.
you have just contradicted yourself.
and the NBA statement is showing ignorance on the priest's behalf.

Remember Me As A Time Of Day
Why would anyone use the lack of perfection in another human being, religious or otherwise, as the sole factor in determining their belief system?
EDIT: Serious question. Not meant to demean anyone. I would really like to know why that is the case.

Well as I said above there are a lot of thing in science, that we really can not explain. We do not have the technology or the brains therefor we can not say there is not a God.
sup guys. i modded my sig to fit this topic! YA!

but back in the real world we don't believe in things just because we cant prove they don't exist.
The question was about being an Atheist, i.e. not believing in any god. Atheist does not mean that you can prove one doesn't exist.
For simplicity scientific proof is often taken as an absolute - but any true scientist know it actually means that all the evidence points overwhelmingly to a conclusion, but never absolute.
Almost all people would say there is no bogey man but you cant prove it - that no reason for the world to not suspect people that do believe do so for some psychological reason rather than think there is a chance one exists.

What an excellent idea, although weren't there inventions inspired by religion? I am an atheist but ill give them some credit. Also I think that without religion there would be lots of depression.Scardaddy wrote:

But something does not have to be proven to not exist only to exist. At least scientificly.KylieTastic wrote:

I wanna point out that a "Theory" in science, is basically as concrete as it gets. In everyday usage a theory is something that might or might not be, but in science, a theory basically is proof.
Theory in science is based on the most recent discoveries. Science once thought the world was flat, that the sun revolved around the earth, etc etc the list goes on. Since we see science constantly adjusting it's "facts" with new discoveries, it cannot be concrete.norge wrote:

Actually scientific law is far more concrete than any theory. A theory is for the most part believed to be true, but not proven. A law is something like "gravity exists" because it has been proven time and again through many experiments of many different people.
Because people are waking up to logic & thinking instead of "feeling" the faith they are suppose to have. Religion is a doctrine of fear & death. You should wake up as well, it's a great world, shame to miss it pining away for the next life only to discover that you didn't do what you were suppose to & now have to do it all over.sergeriver wrote:
Today almost 1,2 billion persons are atheists or agnostics.
Why do you think people stopped believing?
Does science prove everything to such a point that people can't believe in God anymore?
Is Organized Religion making people lose faith in God?
Those who choose to believe, do they actually believe, or do they fear to be alone?
That's very stereotypical, religions are much more than that. There is very profound philosophy and spiritualism in most religions that are interesting to study whether you believe in god or not. But that side of religion never makes headlines, hence all people think about religion is how dinosaurs defeat the bible and the koran is a terrorist brainwash manual...TrollmeaT wrote:
