You probably all know about the Srebrenica genocide that happened in 1995 in Bosnia.
Ill give you a link to wikipedias article about it but its probably too long for anyone to read it. Atleast read the introduction...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Srebrenica_massacre

...The Srebrenica Massacre (also: Srebrenica Genocide) was the July 1995 killing of an estimated 8,000 [1] Bosniak males, ranging in age from teenagers to the elderly, in the region of Srebrenica in Bosnia and Herzegovina by the Army of Republika Srpska under the command of general Ratko Mladić. In addition to the Army of Republika Srpska, special state security forces of Serbia known as the "Scorpions" participated in the massacre. [2] The United Nations had previously declared Srebrenica a UN protected "safe area" and 400 armed Dutch peacekeepers were present at the time, but they did not prevent the massacre. [3] The massacre included several instances where preteen children and women were also killed.[4] While the exact number killed will never be known, the list of people missing or killed in Srebrenica compiled by the Federal Commission of Missing Persons so far includes 8,373 names.[5]

In short, Srebrenica was declared a "safe zone" and was put under UN protection. This included disarming of both sides. Soon after 8000 men and children were killed. The DUtch battalion that was tasked with protecting that "safe zone" did nothing but gather most of the people at one place.

Now this is NOT about why they did nothing and why did the massacre happen but why are the soldiers receiving medals ???

http://www.guardian.co.uk/yugo/article/ … 94,00.html

Basicly have they done enough to receive a medal for it ? Or do they deserve a medal?

The article provided wrote:

The medals were to acknowledge that the Dutch troops had "for years wrongly been held responsible for what happened in the enclave," said Mr Kamp.
The government think it's justified.

I'd say no, but it's not my call.

Seriously, if they're giving them medals for this, they might as well try a new recruitment campaign:

"Join the army!!! Sign up before May 2007 and get a free medal!!!"

Perhaps try reading the article?  The medals are to reflect the fact that their job put them in a very difficult place, moreso than the average soldier.

I comprehend perfectly. We just seem to have very different opinions on whether what they did/went through is actually worth any medals.

And please, when you j*** off, stop doing it over your keyboard man. The juice is making your . key stick.

The dutch government (Kok)  fell over the Screbrenizca debacle, the responsible minister/secretary of defense (Voorhoeve) resigned.
There was a videotape of the conversation of Karremans (ex- dutch commander now decorated) and war-criminal Mladic, which was embarressing for the dutch military - to say the least -.
It has to be noted that when air-support was asked by the Dutch to the french UN general in charge of the operation, air-support was denied, so the Dutch were no match against the tanks of Mladic.
Mladic knew that, but Karremans was "left-in-the-dark" by the UN high command.

To see this Karremans  getting a medal is  quite embarrassing.... didnt deserve it anyway.

If they did their job and followed their orders and thereby kept the place save, then why shouldn't they get the appropriate medal for that? Or do you all think that you only deserve a medal when you are under heavy enemy fire, only two of you left and you singlehandedly take out an entire squad of enemies like it only happens in movies? Grow up, get a sense of reality.

Seriously, how do you DARE COMPLAIN about the fact that we wern't doing anything? If only all armies around the world wouldn't do anything, would solve a lot of these wars. A countries army is not meant to shoot anything in site and always be on the front lines (America likes to do that and we have no problem with that, saves us a lot of casualties). Sometimes doing nothing - as you put it -  is much more important then continuesly looking for a fight.

And yet you make completely ridiculous connections like suggesting that they have gone through no hardship.

Oh, you are so witty.  Seriously, you should do stand up or something.  And how is jack a word that need *s?  Particularly given the context, which ruins any attempt at maintaining decency.

Well point is, the mission was to protect the safe zone. Hence the designation "safe zone".
So they failed their mission, miserably, and didnt do their job.  And its not like they fought a bloody battle and couldnt hold the line so they retreated.

Yeah good idea they shoulda just stayed fought then died then got medals nailed to their coffins great thinking. If you dont know the Scorpions were a special forces squad good luck to the dutch with that.

They fought to the best of their ability but weren't able to stop them so the next thing they did was staying alive at any possible cost. If that means sharing a cup of coffee with enemy troops as they practically hold you hostage, then that is what they do. When performing a mission there are 2 golden rules:

1. Follow your orders/Complete the mission
2. Keeping yourself and your squad alive.

Should the first fail, you move on to the second, which is exactly what they did. They failed their mission but managed to survive with only one casualty under extremely tense circumstances. Yes, they deserved that medal.

Otherwise the Purple Heart is one big joke as well, because according to your logic that would be something like this:

"Why give this man a medal? The idiot got himself shot..."
