I talked to a Fijian lady about it at work today, and I must admit I've changed my mind somewhat. I'm told that after the 2000 coup, Laisenia Qarase made a deal which would of solved most of Fiji's problems, particularly that of racial discrimination. Except he reneged on most of the deals and nothing was solved, hence why Cdre.Bainimarama is finally doing something about it. From what she said, the Commodore's claims do have substance, and Qarase is a liar, corrupt, a backstabber...you name it.
Now I don't condone the way in which the Commodore has gone about it, but at the same time it may yet bear fruit. I think I'll get off the grass and back onto the fence.

Avoiding the needless loss of life is far from immoral. And besides, we (NZ) won't have a decent sealift capacity until early 2007Phantom2828 wrote:

@Phantom - We have 3 warships in the area to evacuate Australians from Fiji. Already, we have lost 7 members of the ADF due to the Blackhawk incident while on that exercise. As the Fijian military commander said he will attack any outside force, Australia is not willing to needlessly sacrifice lives - on either side.
Saying that we don't have the "morals" to stand up for anyone is bullshit. Australia is deeply involved in the region with military assistance to many countries. While we don't have the grandure that the USA has, the ADF doesn't leave a country and fuck it up... (a la Vietnam, North Korea, and many African nations just to name a few).
While the Cdre might be doing this to remove a corrupt (whatever) leader, does he really understand the economic impact it may have on his nation?
Mcminty.
Morals? How can the US have morals with such fucked up youth ?Phantom2828 wrote:

The immaturaty on this thread. It seems that Americans don't give a shit unless they're directly ivolved, (very unfair to base that assumption on Mr. Phantom there I know.)
It's the fourth coup in twenty years, it's a messed up place for Paradise. Both Australia and New Zealand are doing what they can. Just because that dosn't involve rushing in there with incredible military arrogance dosn't mean we're not doing anything.
