Yes this would fall far away from realistic warfare and turn out to be Sci-Fi/Futuristic.
But bear with me for those who are distasted by this idea.  You could be missing out...

For those who don't know Warhammer 40,000 it's originally a heavily detailed table game./(dice rolling game)
Filled with many armies and various rules, weapons, vehicles, characters, etc...
Personally I don't play this kind of game but rather watch others.  So I'm not encouraging anyone to pick it up or anything.  I believe this has potential to become a very incredible Battlefield game.

I do play Dawn of War, which is a Warhammer 40K strategic game for the PC.
I would like you to watch these videos.

Imagine sitting in a Dreadnought which is that vehicle that mows down that side of the hill. 
(But it got "C4ed" by a tank busta.)
Replace the knife with a chainsaw sword/Combat weapons.
Same kits but with different weapons and options:  AT/Sniper/Assault/Spec/Support/Engineer//
Snipers if you didn't notice there is a crane during the rush scene.

Please share your ideas on how this could be, can't be, shouldn't be, etc...

Hmm, it would be difficult... Since Space Marines has POWER armor and are fast as hell. And Tau has incredible long range weapons(and Kroots). Orcs has good speed and "armor"(skin) and weak guns. Tyranids don't have weapons, and if they have the character that has those weapons is huge like hell and can anhiliate a Space Marine Dreadnought. Imperial Guard has weak large armies wich are being aided by huge armor units. So if you take away all those specialitys you will only get Battle Field 40K, lol. But great idea anyway

These guys have been working on this mod since BF 1942.  I got to play the 1942 beta and it was pretty fun.  When BF2 came out they had to rework all of it so it may be sometime before it's playable.  Here's the link.
