Has anybody here heard whats going on in Fiji?  Slightly curious?  Don't care?

The instigator and head of the RFMF (Royal Fijian Military Forces), Commodore Frank Bainimarama, has mobilized the entire Fijian military, including the territorials for the coup, putting them through training exercises aimed at heading off a "foreign intervention" (he may as well  have said "an ANZAC invasion"), and later taking countrol of the entire country.  In the process many officials have been ousted, the police disarmed and members of the press harrased by soldiers carrying automatic rifles.

His reason for the coup is that he wants to "clean up" corruption in Fiji.  Hes pissed at a bill which would pardon the insigators of the previous coup, among other things...but he also has an axe to grind with regards to the attempt on his life during the previous coup (2000), AND before the shit started he was demanding that investigations against him be stopped.  Smell fishy yet?

Australia and New Zealand have refused a request for military assistance by the country's democratically elected (and now-deposed) Prime Minister, Laisenia Qarase, wishing to avoid a bloodbath.

it is said that democracy is like a delicate flower. If the correct political, social and economical climate are not present, it will wilt in death, or be manipulated as a tool for the power hungry. Sage words imo.

Completely isolate them from the outside world and see how they get on (with aid airdropped to civilians only). We'll see how many bullets and tanks they can carve out of coconut trees!

How can Australia ans NZ stand by and watch a coup happen? This is a democratically elected government being overthrown.

Maybe they were thinking about it cos the SAS was stationed off the coast ready to be deployed.

Then again, maybe this suits AUS and NZ better politically.

Totally amazes me.

Yes, because other countries are so very dedicated to helping others at their own expense.................

At the minute, we're kind of a little busy with the rest of our neighbours.  Would I like us to help?  Yes.  Can I understand the logic behind not comitting?  For once, yes.  Fiji and the Solomon Islands are both as bad as Fiji at the minute, and there are other countries we assist also.  If we aren't careful, we're going to end up running a whole heap of tiny little islands which we don't own or want.

Probably more than 3, but if we're running around going on about bringing democracy to the Middle East, shouldn't we be supporting democracy in our neighbours?

The rest of the paragraph was irrelevant to the point I was making. So It wasn't necessary to quote it.

As for the topic, I agree with Kmarion when he said:

Fiji is very keen on democracy, however their current chief of the military isn't.

You don't read any newspapers do you?

Reading the Herald Sun for the main headlines is like watching Today Tonight or A Current Affair for the news.

Typical articles and stories in these are.....

-Muslims and Lebanese immigrants hate Australia
-Lose weight now, ask me how
-Jennifer Hawkins appears on cover of (insert magazines here)
-John Howard is a champion of the working Australian.

HA
I always laugh at this. US seems to be the only country with enough morals to stand up for people anymore...
