A victory for democracy. Evo Morales, the populist, leftist, first indigenous leader of the poorest nation in Latin America (despite its wealth of oil and gas) has struck a blow against corporate greed and economic imperialism. This is what he offered the people to get him elected and he has followed through. Democracy in action. If this was cold war era he would have been overthrown by an externally sponsored coup. Will he get away with his just demand for the majority of revenue from the natural resources of Bolivia for long? Who knows. Viva Evo.

What that very short and incomplete report dosen't say is that Evo's action is drastically reducing foreign investment in Bolivia, and that is giving rise to unemployment. One example is a high tech steel mill that was going to be built near the Brazililian border of the country, but now is on permanent hold. And most likely will be built in Venezuela.

Evo could be doing the right thing against the energy companies, but his radical way of doing things is not good for Bolivia's economy in the long run.

The steel mill is being moved to Venezuela? That country is on a one-way ticket to Castro-style communism. Why would it relocate there?

The simple fact of the matter was that Bolivia was being exploited - a wrong which he has righted. All he needs to do now is to make gestures to international investors to show that they can trust him and that all this was was correcting an injustice. Most Latin American countries really do need to start from scratch, something which this move represents.

Evo Morales may sound as a revolutionary, but the truth is the guy is not qualified for the job, he didn't even go to college and he has no clue about the behavior of international markets.
Since becoming president in Jan/06 he nationalized oil and gas.  Brazil is in serious troubles with that.  Argentina can handle it because we have gas and we have a lot of illegal Bolivians here, so make your maths.  But what he is doing is making foreign investment to go away.  Some provinces are asking for separation from Bolivia because of all the changes the guy made.  Bolivia will collapse sooner or later because of Evo Morales.

Maybe, but there's a way to do things without saying if you invest here you are screwed.

It dosen't really matter where it went, it mneant thousands of jobs that one of the poorest regions of Bolivia desperately needed. The mill had even a credit line ready with a French banking institution for the construction.

Ignoring contracts and trying to take by force the instalations of foreign companies are the worst gestures he could make. Bolivian troops actually occupied refineries that were built with money invested in the country, and that are still being paid for.

He might have the right ideas, but he's far from the correct ways to imlpement them. Risign unemployment due to these actions will eventually hurt Bolivia much more in the long run

You assume too much Pollux. I am completely aware and respectful of the role global capital mecessarily plays in the economy of the world. The fact of the matter though is that Latin America has been ravaged by untempered capitalism due to weak government and opportunism. They need to start from scratch with the necessary controls in place so that responsible capitalism takes hold - not wholesale rape of their nations.

I'm a capitalist with a social conscience Pollux in case you need that clarified. I enjoy the finer things in life, that socially responsible capitalism offers.

PS What have you got against democracy? First Hugo Chavez, now the manifesto of Evo Morales????

What Evo has done is singlehandedly convined an entire population to vote for him by dazzling them with money. Bolivia has vast resources and he's pissing the lot away on projects that are good in the short term but completely unsustainable in the long run. Any politician in power could do this for votes, but most are more resposible.
