^ yes. they were close to creating their own atomic weapons. I think we showed far more restraint than Nazi's desperate to save face + germany would have. No doubt Americans were almost the sole fighter of the Japanese, plus some extras & random indigenous ppls.
Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't the Brits fight all throughout south-east asia along with their Indian subjects and the Anzacs? It's not often you hear me talking up the Brits but I reckon that's a fact.R0lyP0ly wrote:

Didn't the Japanese officially surrender to the US?
Edit: I guess so.. was unsure..
Strikes on Hokkaidō and northern Honshū resumed 9 August 1945, the day the second atomic bomb was dropped. Next day, at 20:54, Missouri's men were electrified by the unofficial news that Japan was ready to surrender, provided that the Emperor's prerogatives as a sovereign ruler were not compromised. Not until 07:45, 15 August, was word received that President Truman had announced Japan's acceptance of unconditional surrender.

Ill agree with you on the most part... However some of your facts are abit clouded. Stalin was told 2 days before the Germans attacked by his people in Berlin, the German army made one hell of a noise starting their tanks up and could clearly be heard from the Russian side, however Stalin didn't want to believe this was true and tried to avoid war at all costs, even telling his front line to not shoot until shot at.l=l-Oneill-l=l wrote:
Being raised in USSR and learning history that been given to you over the years, you'll get a different perspective on who won the war over Nazi Germany.
In 1941 Germany attacked Soviet borders in mid July, about a few month they've signed non-aggression treaty with Stalin. Soviets where taking by a surprised, cause we thought we where safe. Some believed that war was inevitable but they expected to start around 43 or 44. But never the less we where at war. By the end of that year Hitler was on the steps of Capital of Soviet Union, Moscow. I've seen footage from that era when on November 7, 1941 soldiers of Red army marching on the parade and going straight to front lines to defend their home land from aggressors. And hungry, unequipped, disarmed solders stop a whole German Tank army right there and then. After that Red army start pushing Germans back. US was helping with some equipment like cars plains, to be honest I don't know any thing about helping with weapons so I;m not going to say anything about it.
While Red army was fighting Germans on Easter front, Japan saw the opportunity to attack USSR from their side. So as you can see Red army was fighting two fronts too.
We also where helping Spain to fight their Fascists, in 1939 but where over powered by a strong support from Germans war machine.
I would like to say that wining that war was a effort of one particular Nation, but I would be wrong. US, Brits, Canadians and Australians made an sizable contribution to defeating Nazi Germany. Even though US, Canada and Britain didn't start European campaign till June of 1944, when at that time Red Army was already fighting in the middle of eastern Europe.
I'm not trying to blame any western nation for interring the war on Western front that late. England is a small county and realistically if they did that they would of been crashed in the instant. US and Australia was busy on their side of the world fig thing Japan. And also trying to kick Hitler out of Africa.
If any of you search the forums here on the same subject, you'd find that I said it before Hitler's worst mistake was attacking USSR. As any other aggressors who was trying to capture that land. We are just to big and there are more of us.
The Africa campaign was finished way before D-day, we took Rome on June 5th the day before D-day thus knocking out one of Hitlers allies.
Sorry to say but it was a "major military committment" I think you call 3-4 commonwealth countries fighting a "major military committment".Kmarion wrote:

Weapons of Mass Destruction does not always mean nukes. They can be chemical weapons (Iraq (as in Desert Storm against Kuwait) and Germany (WWI and the use of Mustard Gas)) they could be biological, or radiological weapons. In general any weapon that can kill large numbers of living beings.Mogura wrote:

That quite literally shows nothing, the majority of those countries didnt even have tanks or planes. 1/4 of them are Commonwealth countries too.
I know that everyone has there favourite country of WW2. Mine is Brazil. We need to keep in mind that no single nation defeated Hitler. It is a foolish thing to say and that "historian" should have been more clear about what he was talking about. Yeah the Russians did most of the fighting. They took on Germany and most of the Axis minors but they did it with a large amount of US and British equipment and on the other side without the Russians grinding up 9/10 of the Wehrmacht victory in the west would never have happened.
The only thing that defeated Hitler was his shortsighted policies. He was not an experienced leader and listened to only himself far to much. Before the war had even started he had made several policy decisions that proved crippling to the fighting. The man wanted a blue water navy that could challenge the Royal Navy, a feat which was completely outside the realm of reality and shortsighted as it was obvious by 1939 that America would be the supreme naval power war or not.
During the mid war years 42-43 when everything was in the balance he had refused to put Germany on a total war footing. He kept women out of the work force and relied on slave labour, which in every documented case, has never been as effective as domestic workforces. He authorized an attack on the Soviet Union with the belief that all that was needed was for "the door to be kicked open and the house of cards will collapse." No contingency plans were ever drawn up and the "goals" of Operation Barbarossa were vague at best. The man routinely sacked his best generals and in some cases replaced them with friends, ie Fieldmarschall Himmler. He declared war on America when he was being thrown back at the gates of Moscow in support of a nation on the other side of the globe who refused to fight the Russians at all.
I could go on for hours but my point is that any historian that tells you one nation defeated Hitler has no business writing anything. That is just a shameful lack of analysis and I strongly urge that noone listen to that man. This also goes for anyone who uses Wikipedia as a source.
