What is a n00b?
It seems an elementary question to ask, but many people have mixed opinions of the word.

Quite honestly, I don't like it. In fact, I don't like any word that is spelled with numbers instead of letters, but I didn't invent the word, it exists, and I can cope with that.

Dictionary.com defines 'noob', (spelled with 'o's, not zeros,) as either Newbie, as is the common belief of the word, and most probably the origin, and the acronym, None of Our Business, (which I don't think is really relevent here.)

As I was writing this I went back to the BF2S homepage, and noted that Tetrino had started a similar post while I was in the middle of writing this one, (what are the chances?) I have noted that Tetrino has written on it, but his definitions, (n00b = annoying, newb = new,) although accurate, simply arn't in use with people always opting fer n00b, with either zeros or 'o's, but never 'Newb." Furthermore, as I had already pretty much fully written this, I wasn't keen to simply delete it, (I added this paragraph later.)

As mentioned before, the common belief is that a 'n00b' is someone who is new at a game, and thus inexperianced. This can be true, but has become slighty skewed. You have people in game saying that they are 'n00bs' so please be easy on them. People understand this as someone who is new, inexperianced, and needs a leg up, or a hand every now and then. I have been a babysitter to a few of my friends when they were new to the game.

However, the use of the word has become far wider. It has been added as a prefix to words, (such as 'tube',) yet now in this occurence, the word definatly does not describe someone who is new, but someone who uses a certain 'uncultured' weapon, much to the annoyance of others. Other examples have people shouting "N00B!" to the world after a team mate harms then in some way, (in a BF2 world, running over friendly mines, or punishing when a punish was not called for.) This does not really decribe the initial meaning of the word, as it does not describe someone who is new to a game, meerly someone who has acted foolishly.

On this very forum there have been complaints that 'n00b' is a term thrown around all too loosley. N00b-tube, TK punish-n00bs, tank-whore-n00bs etc. and some people who are actually new to the game find it offensive that the people who are new are made to feel bad because of the mistakes of people who are quite experianced at the game. Therefore, I suggest the following.

      1)     To describe a new person to a game, the word should have a suffix added to it so it is similar to the word it was origonally meant to replace, (Newbie,) e.g: n00by. Note: the use of zeros is still accepted as it seems in-keeping with current computer lingo. The word 'Newb' would also be acceptable.

      2)     The core word, n00b, no longer describes a new person, but it describes someone who has happened to annoy you. This has an added bonus of phasing out the use of insulting swear-words which get you kicked, (although I am against this practice, and only use swear words to add "oomph" to sentances, or to show frustration.) It will be more acceptible on such mediums as the BF2S forums, rather than in-game.

Furthermore, I would like to take the liberty of adding a solid dictionary definition of the word.

Um. Using it to describe someoen who is annoying is simply using it as a pejorative.
That does not actually change the meaning of the word.

my definition of "n00b"
1. Some one who is arrogant at gaming yet has no skills, AT ALL
2. A person that has absolutely no clue about what he/she is doing in a game
3. One who is a total prick during games i.e. - mic spams, teamkills, gets worked up and mad at nothing special, constantly hogs a vehicle and dies 20 seconds later.

many examples of these "n00bs" in bf2 are:
- Beagle05 (a total idiot that tk's for planes, tk's for no reason, stat pads, and farms repair points [flips boat and constatly repairs]

- <(Chrons666)> (was an idiot, used to tk for planes, ram to crap out of everything chopper in the sky, and was a general annoyance to many of the players)

- UdaiHussein (absolute fag, keeps on going on about how he doesnt care about anything, layed down AT mines all over the carrier, making it a tk'ers paradise)

there are many more specific definitions of a noob as well

Pocket Noob - a person in your squad who is basically good for one thing; disposable cannon fodder, bullet shield, distraction, etc.  cant kill anyone to save his life, dont count on him to watch your back.  but he will spawn on you and take some hot lead in the back to let you know when/where the enemies are coming.  can usually be found standing up in the open when the rest of the squad is hugging gravel for their lives.

Facce Noob - comes from a piss poor pronunciation of what 'face' might sound like in italian or some crap. pronounced fah-chay.  a Facce Noob is someone so bad that their only skill lies in 'getting owned in the facce'.

Commander Newblington - ever charge a heavily fortified base and clear out the enemies only to then have your commander call arty on your position?  thats him

Arnold Noobzenegger - charges in anywhere and everywhere guns a'blazin, but kills nothing.  like arnold in commando tries to snipe people with his m249 with one hand while jumping, but unlike arnold, does not succeed in anything but redecorating the landscape with a swiss cheese theme.

Survivor Noob - the jackass who sits in some random corner/crane/tower/hole when all his teams flags are captured, holding on to his life with the tenacity of a pit bull.  refusing to budge as he is sure that any movement will lead to death, which he believes will kill him in real life.(usually his activities can be found in servers that are rapidly emptying due to his teams annoyance at this pool of intellectually void goo.

I like those ones YitEarp. I have encountered every single one of them.

And I suppoese you're right dracul, but the word n00b is essentially a noun. People call other people n00bs, or say 'you are acting like a n00b,' but never, 'you are being a bit n00bish today,' although  suppose you could use it like that if you wanted to.

Lol, what are the chances? I suppose your definition is a lot more precise, but I prefer to stick with 'Newb' to avoid people misunderstanding.
