My girlfriend and I were at the beach today, on our bikes, sitting, enjoying the wonderful day.  Then comes this group of three teenage boys on their bikes, jumping off rocks, pulling all these "madd" stunts and whatnot, and I'm thinking, "someone's going to get hurt."  Of course, they all had no protective gear, not even helmets.  I was, and I asked my girlfriend to wear one as well.  Of course she didn't want to, but she did in the end.  Moving on.

The three kids leave the beach, and we leave shortly after.

We are behind them some distance, but I can still see them pretty well.  They were all over the road, crisscrossing, going on and off the sidewalk, just being stupid.  Suddenly, one of the kids speeds off from behind a parked car, and got hit by a big black SUV.  He went flying off his bike, off the side of the SUV and onto the pavement.  I nearly shit myself when I saw this, and cycled as fast as I could over to him.  As I yelled for a bystander to dial 911, I told him to lie perfectly still (he was conscious) since I wasn't sure if he hurt his neck (no helmet).  He seemed to have hurt his right arm, I told him to not move it.  Meanwhile, there's a big crowd of people now, trying to help, and some people got ice, and a pillow for his head.  I kept his head and neck straight using the inside of my hands (between thumb and index finger) until the paramedics arrived.  Then they took over.

The whole time, the driver of the SUV is going crazy, crying, and she felt horrible.  (She was probably speeding though).  I'm not sure who is more at fault here, the woman who may have been speeding, or the kid who was all over the road.

Turns out the kid had a broken right arm and wrist, and mildly hurt his neck.

Moral of the story:
1.  Don't do stupid shit when on a bike.
2.  Don't speed in residential neighborhoods.
3.  Wear a helmet.  It's better to look funny than get a head injury.

Discuss.

i went skiing for the second time ever, and went down double black diamonds with no helmet.  every other person on the mountain wore one.

i faceplanted many times, but here i am today.

biking, however, is pretty dangerous.  probably moar dangerous biking in an urban area than on mountains, which is what i do.  so wear your fucking helmet.

mine took a while to adjust at first, but other than that no.  it would just make those kids look like total goofballs and not the totally cool chillsters they are without helmets.

You have to be careful when you help someone that has been hurt, if you do something wrong, they can sue you for it.

Good Samaritan Law...

General guidelines

   1. Unless a caretaker relationship (such as a parent-child or doctor-patient relationship) exists prior to the illness or injury, or the "Good Samaritan" is responsible for the existence of the illness or injury, no person is required to give aid of any sort to a victim.
   2. Any first aid provided must not be in exchange for any reward or financial compensation. As a result; medical professionals are typically not protected by Good Samaritan laws when performing first aid in connection with their employment.
   3. If aid begins, the responder must not leave the scene until:
          * it is necessary to call for needed medical assistance.
          * somebody of equal or higher ability can take over.
          * continuing to give aid is unsafe (this can be as simple as a lack of adequate protection against potential diseases, such as vinyl, latex, or nitrile gloves to protect against blood-borne pathogens) — a responder can never be forced to put himself or herself in danger to aid another person.
   4. The responder is not legally liable for the death, disfigurement or disability of the victim as long as the responder acted rationally, in good faith, and in accordance with his level of training.

Your brain sits inside your skull with the ability to move around a little. When you fall without a helmet, your head comes to a sudden stop - your brain keeps on moving (as things happen, it has momentum). So your brain slams into your skull and gets nice and bruised. Hard enough, and you can bleed out.

Helmets, made of some wonderful soft foamy stuff, increase the stopping distance, and thus decrease the force that is applied to your brain via the inside of your skull.

You can be as careful as you want, until some other idiot (yes, without one you are an idiot) comes around the corner in their car and collides with you. Helmets. They are made for a reason. Wear them.
