I love the soundtrack to Heat, as well as Traffic.
The Fugitive.
The score for that movie is just really damn good.

That is a pretty damn good one. A good rapper I listen to actually rapped over a beat made out of that song.

personally, best soundtrack ever.
Natewise nailed it with the first post.
Ennio Morricone's soundtrack to "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" is my favorite. "A Fistfull of Dollars" is pretty damn great too.

We Were Soldiers
... at first it was Black Hawk Down, but it is now that. I have never heard such good music in a film - they have really captured ... the real essence of war in their music. It's within range of 'stunning' - I definitely recommend you watch the film and listen to the soundtrack.

Maximum Overdrive!
I really enjoyed Beowulf's soundtrack, but the movie overall was pretty lame.

One of my favourite films, partly because of it's perfectly fitting and epic soundtrack, is "Apollo 13".

Posted a while back in the 'Funeral song' thread, I find this one of the more appealing soundtracks.
The Rock- Theme song

The soundtrack that I probably listen to most regularly is the Fight Club soundtrack. I also listen to the Matrix soundtracks occasionally, as well as all the LotR soundtracks.

The soundtrack captures perfectly, in your words, the "epicness" of just what they were trying to do. It's amazing, the sense you get of the hopes, fears and dreams of both the nation and the 'individual's' (astronauts, families and NASA staff on the ground) involved.
Gortoz a Ran - J'Attends (performed by Denez Prigent and Lisa Gerrard) From the 2001 movie Black Hawk Down. Which won the 2002 Academy Award for Best Sound (Michael Minkler, Myron Nettinga, Chris Munro) mind you (amoung many, many other awards).
Listening to the beginning gives me chills down the spine, especially at 4:42. I have never heard a song that has captured the emotion of the events of a movie like this song.
