How Can People Not Like Slap Bass!?

I was talking with a guy today about a college project involving the bass and got onto the subject of slap bass and he started to go into great detail about how much he hated it. I've known lots of bass players in the past too who don't like it. Now I know there's a time and a place for it (yeah, the 80's! lol) but come on, you've got be a pretty miserable human being to not like a bit of funky slap bass every now and again.

What do you think?

I just took a peek on youtube and no offense his playing style reminds me of some of the exercises I used to do back when I was around 14-15 , but that's what great about music , it's all about what you like , sorry he didn't do a thing for me

Mark King does sound dated I'll give you that but he has that stereotypical cheesy slap sound (that's why I used him for the clip).

I like Rush and I like Geddy Lee but I've never seen him do anything I couldn't do myself...not like Wooten, Claypool or Stanley Clarke.

So you can play every riff he lays on YYZ?

Come on now, he's not a slapper, but Geddy Lee is by far a superb musician and bass player. I've seen hundreds of fools try to cover Rush, and no bass player has ever played it right. Geddy is all about technique and hitting notes dead on the right point, as progressive music tends to be.

But yeah, Wooten is all anyone needs to know. He encompasses every facet of the bass like no one else. Have you heard his shit with Bela Fleck? Totally different from what he does with his family like above...
