I'm sure IE8 and 9 will get Microsoft close to catching up with the others in the standards compliance department. They've already taken a big step with IE8, breaking most websites relying on IE < 8 kinks in IE8 native mode.

No serious browser is fully standards compliant, but hopefully an IE aiming for compliance will force other development teams into focusing more on compliance, rather what they're doing today, which is more or less sitting back with their arms crossed and all agreeing that at least they're better than IE.
yes... a standards based browser would definitely help the lives of web deveolpers out there.  its funny when our team here slaves over code that finally works perfectly in IE, only to have someone walk up with firefox and tell us it crashed their pc.  the profanity!  but it is good that MS is making strides in the right direction.  They've already been pusing for compliance with office and the xml standard, and i'm sure the rest of their future developments will be compliant with the industy standard.

This is the new IE8 beta. I've heard it's a lot faster than IE7, and Microsoft has finally made it standards-compliant (remember it's beta so there are probably kinks, but their goal is to make IE standards-compliant). I'm gonna download it when I get home... even if it's a buggy POS, since I never use IE... this could possibly change that

"how is it better then firefox (beta 3 included) and opera 9(?)?"
Damned if I know... the main advantage is that if these guys actually make it standards compliant, then the web will be better because then (I think) all the major browsers (IE, Opera, Firefox, Safari) will be standards-compliant. So no more "This site designed for IE"
Well sure that's the theory.

But, the larger percentage of people will still be IE6/IE7.

Eh? A lot of Windows programs rely on IE, you can't completely uninstall it so you haven't really saved any space.

You haven't been paying attention, have you? Microsoft is opening up more and more to open source. They're actually becoming a likeable company.

That is indeed the sad truth. MS rolls out forced updates all the time, but for some reason they refuse to do it with IE. That's just plain old bollocks.

IE7 has been in the Windows Update repository as a default install for a while now, hasn't it?

Yes, but not as a forced update AFAIK.

Firefox has been needing their update as well. They have been far behind Opera and Safari in terms of webstandards, and have only really caught up in 3. The fact that you can do special coding for it (-moz-) in CSS doesn't make it better - as this is only supported by Mozilla browsers. I don't get how people don't see that this is great news for the internet in general, as it means less sites will need IE and less sites will break in IE (thus great for coders as well - no longer have to unbreak the site in IE). This is a huge step for Microsoft (actually getting up to webstandards) along with their opening up of source code... I guess some people here are simply anti-MS fanboys, who at some point just jumped on the bandwagon and can't make an opinion for themselves.

Actually, now IE are losing out big time, I think that there will actually be a required update to IE8/7. Why? Simply because now FF is the dominating browser.

Check the statistics for yourself.

MS don't like that, so they are going to try and make their browser better.

One thing that I have to point out though, MS holds in their hands all the companies who use iNotes and any other special intranet system. As WELL as banking sites ( halifax etc ). All those sites cannot be operated in anything but IE. MS are still refusing to release the code and so no other browser can come up with such compatabilities.
