Why can't the people on Lost just build a boat?!?!

I was discussing thsi with CanadianLoser. It's just like Gilligan's Island... on that show there was a scientist who could make radios out of coconuts (or something) but god forbid that a man of science can fix a boat.

The people on Lost are supposed to be all leet and shit? THEN WHY THE FUCK DON"T THEY BUILD A BOAT?! Even the Vikings and Phonecians or some other eradicated civilization were able to make them, and they didn't exactly have moar tools at their disposal.

they did get on it and attempt to leave
they would go straight out, away from the island, but then the island would show up right where they are headed. The island isn't just an island. It's mysterious and no laws or theories of the real-world necessarily comply with the island.
