hey guys

looking at loads of laptops for 6th form in September ....

I like the looks of the Dell M1330 and M1530

I can get either with (roughly)

T7250
2GB RAM
160GB 7200RPM HD
Bluetooth
Fingerprint Reader
Dedicated video cards (M1330 - 8400GS, M1530 - 8600M GT)
9 Cell Batteries
___________

Both around ~ £750-800

I just don't know which would be best for me ... it will be carried around a lot and need to be comfortable to do so ...

Do i go for larger/more powerful or smaller and mobile?

Cheers guys

Since you need to carry it around a lot, you should get the M1330.

I'd take the bigger one just because it's bigger. 13.3" lappies often have the crappiest screens.

EDIT: After taking a look at Dell's site, the 13.3" seems quite good after all. Since it's the 8400 with dedicated memory and not TC, it could actually perform quite well. I say, go for the 13.3". (I have a 7300LE card with 64MB, and it runs BF2 almost maxed smoothly)

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

I'd get the bigger one, they'll probably weigh about the same regardless of the case size and you get the advantage of the larger screen.

I would choose the one that suits your lifestyle the most. if you plan on carrying it around a lot or traveling, then go with the 13.3.   I have a 17" dell XPS and its great, but its such a pain to take it anywhere i ended up getting a 12" thinkpad for travel.

I would get the 13.3, unless you think that graphics chipset is not going to be adequate for you.

I've got a 15.4" screen- the Dell Inspiron 6400, and take it to school + carry it around with me every day.

No problems whatsoever- but remember- its gonna go in your bag anyway, so it doesn't matter if its 2" bigger

-Carried every day
-Schoolwork
-Possibly light gaming occasionally

About a kilo between the 15/30 30, not much in it tbh ... slightly better battery life with the 13 also

Light gaming is Solitaire for everything else you need a "powerful" laptop. I have a 15" lappy and its not that heavy especially when put in a backpack. 13" laptops are not good enough for gaming unless the very high priced ones. So the 15" is a bit heavier but less expensive and you can use it for gaming. Besides a bigger screen never harmed anyone.

When i say light gaming i don't mean solitaire, i mean it will only be used for gaming when i can't use my desktop

get the bigger one. Way nicer to work on. Typing on a 13 inch is just a pain. And high resolutions are a must for proper work. I carry a 17inch to uni every day and it isn't a problem with size/weight.
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

I'm just saying that with a 13" you can play solitaire unless you spend 2000 € for it. They have a sucky graphics card integrated. Not for gaming not even light gaming.

You need at least 8600.

I have a Dell Vostro 1500 with an 8400GS, and I can play BF2 alright on it.  I prefer my desktop, but hey, when I'm in the library and don't feel like studying, I can fire it up if I want.  It plays all the games I play--GTA2, BF2, and CnC Generals Zero Hour

It's a T7100, 2GB RAM, 120GB HDD, 8400GS, 15.4 inch LCD.  I bring it with me whenever I go to school, so it isn't too heavy or anything.

Edit:  I bought in October for about ~$1000 USD

Between the two, it all comes down to what you want to sacrifice:

By choosing the M1530, you get a larger screen, possibly higher resolution screen, and better dedicated graphics card. However, you also get the larger footprint, slightly heavier weight.

By choosing the M1330, you get a choice for a LED screen, smaller footprint, and easier portability. But you're going to lack the gaming power of the 8600m GT and the smaller screen might be uncomfortable for you.

If possible, go to a store or a Dell kiosk with both on display and see if you can lift it and play around with it. Then you can decide if the weight difference is negligible or if the 13.3" screen is large enough.

As for the 84000m GS vs 8600m GT, the 8600m GT is undoubtedly the superior card, but by no means is the 8400m GS a crappy card. It's actually a fairly decent card, just don't expect to play Crysis well. But I believe it can play BF2, CoD4, and some other modern titles comfortably (without much AA with newer titles).

Comments say he's playing "lowest everything incl. res.". Still, not too bad for a laptop.

Definitely the M1530. It can actually run games (4300 in 3dMark06), and isn't too heavy. My friend has one, so this is speaking from experience. He carries it every day to school as well.

Will this be your main machine? If not, I say mobility.
