I just upgraded my graphics card and I'm noticing some weird graphics glitches in bf2:

Note the garbled text at the top of the screen.

Note the weird texture on the water and the black region to the left + the gun is green!

I've tried different versions of my graphics driver to no avail. I've seen the garbled text in the ATI demos aswell as BF2, but the texture issue seems to be unique to BF2.

My System:
Winxp sp2
Athlon 64 3000
1 Gig Ram
ATI Radeon HD 2600 AGP (512MB)

Any suggestions for a fix would be welcome.

I know this kinda seems like spam, but what the hell are you doing with an AGP 2600?

If you're sure nothing is overheating then I'm really not sure what the problem is, other than maybe the computer gods are telling you that you should have upgraded your motherboard and RAM to a new platform to handle a newer graphics card.

edit: It's kinda like sticking a v8 on a mini-van...you can, but it's not exactly recommended.

-is it correctly fitde in
-have you dwl the latest ati driver
-is the card is meant to be runed on xp (dx 9)
-i hope you got an agp slot... probably can't fit anyway

well i dont know what really can cause this but check these obvious thing b4... if its not done yet

I'm not really sure what you're on about with the v8/mini-van thing. Yeah, having 16x bandwidth with PCI-E would be nice but it isn't really necessary...yet - AGPx8 will still be good for awhile and saves me $$$ as I don't have to throw out my old kit and start over. With a system like mine, the most likely bottleneck is bandwidth on the card itself! Your analogy would make sense if I had a 2600 chipset coupled to 64Meg DDR or something stupid like that. Actually, playing BF2 is very smooth in fact at medium-high settings - no jerkiness whatsoever.

I know the issue is not heat related as it is present as soon as I start the game, and stays there consistently throughout.

I'm happy putting up with some weird textures, but not being able to read menu options is a real pain. I'm putting my money on dodgy drivers combined with EA Games/Dice catering more for NVidia chipsets.

I just got a 2600XT from HIS - PCI-E

Have you tried downloading JUST the updated drivers - Catalyst has always given me problems, so i just DL the drivers.

Thanks T.Pike. Yeah I tried the latest 'driver only' from both ATI and Saphire, but no luck. Actually, the ATI driver said it couldn't detect valid hardware...weird? I also tried the latest 'Omega Driver' alternative but that gave me blue screens all the time, so I'm sticking with the latest driver from Saphire for now.

I had the same problem with a X1950 pro agp , i had to disable AGP fast write and AGP write in SmartGart. This was on a Uli chipset motherboard running an Athlon processor, i later changed to a VIA chipset board and never had a problem since with all SmartGart options enabled.

Problem solved.

Thankyou pez222 - you've made my day!!

I checked Smartgart and it was showing 'speed 0x' for AGP which I thought was odd. After some investigation I realised that I hadn't installed my motherboard drivers (which include drivers for Gart!). After installing the drivers, Smartgart showed the correct readings.

All the graphics glitches have now gone in Battlefield 2!

2600? You'd have been better off with with an 8600

Lol,  lemmi guess - you've got the 8600, right?

If you're talking 8600 with DDR3, then yes - that'd be a better performer (but cost more $$), otherwise I think they're pretty much even. Also, AFAIK, 8600 is only available in PCI-E, I've only got AGP!

...no, you're being bottlenecked like crazy with that processor and only one gig of RAM. I think you would have been much happier with a motherboard/RAM/processor upgrade when you could afford it, but it's too late now so there's no use second guessing it.

I'm glad you got the problem fixed.

FM, 'bottlenecked like crazy'!?  if you've got any data to back that up, please post here or PM me as I'd like to know. My research on the topic suggested otherwise.

What I've found in practice, is that my CPU actually runs at a lower utilization with BF2 at 1028x960 than it did with BF1942 using a Geforce 4000 at 1024x768!! My CPU used to overheat majorly and I'd have play with my case off to keep things cool. With the 2600 I haven't had to do this... To my way of thinking, that goes to show that there is actually less demand on the base system.
