I remeber reading somewhere on this forum or on the internet that new motherboards would have lights on them that when you plug in the power cord it tells you if your hardware is working or if one thing is not without having to turn on the system, just by LEDs on all the slots and stuff. Is this true or did I read wrong?

A few motherboards have debug LEDs.

True. But do you really trust broken hardware to tell you how broken it is?

That's why you never take any diagnostic tool at face value.

I trust my motherboard to tell me which piece of hardware isn't working.

My AM2 MSI board had something similar.  It had four diagnostic LED's, and they lit up when something went wrong.  Just use the manual to diagnose the code and you're set.

I have that MSI board too.  It told me that my RAM wasn't installed properly so I just reseated it.  Saved a lot of hair pulling trying to figure out what was wrong.

yeah technology telling you that its broken sounds like a stupid zombie scenario, can't open a door so have to break it down even if its not locked

I have one on my Abit IP35 Pro, it's great with a see-through side panel .

Do I trust broken hardware to tell me "How" broken it is? Well, no... but these LED's are basically just a visual representations of the POST-beeping that we've all been hearing for the past 20 years.

My Abit throws LCD error codes, not that I've ever paid attention to it.

You shouldn't. They're ok to give you an idea, but you don't want to place any trust in them.
