Considering this is my first rig, I plan to update in April. That'll make it a year to the date of buying the CPU and Motherboard, which I'm going to be replacing (Going from an EVGA 680i and E6600 to a X38 + Core 2 Quad Q9450 <3), and then I'll probably update my graphics card (8800 GTX) to the 9 series in the summer.

What about you?

I'm contemplating adding 2 GB of RAM right now because Vista is a memory hog and 2 GB is sometimes insufficient.  I probably won't go for a new mobo/cpu until late next year.  I have the same mobo, gfx, and cpu as you right now, I just don't have the funds to upgrade a total overhaul right now.

With my first system I rarely upgraded. Originally started with half a gig of RAM, then threw on another one and a half a year later.

I ordered my new system the other night and will be building it next week. I don't plan on upgrading it any time soon, but when I do, it could be in the summer or maybe even a year from now. If I do it in the summer, it'll be a new mobo and another graphics card to run CrossFire. Then later I would get a quad-core CPU once the prices have lowered.

I upgrade whenever a game doesn't run on my system. So far this AMD 64 3000+++ has survived since June 2005 and can run Crysis with graphics on Max.

I call hax...or lies.  There's no way you could happily (15+ FPS) max Crysis.  At least not on any resolution above 800x600.

He runs it 320x200 maybe???

In all honesty, I have roughly the same chip, but I do have a good vid card and I can run it on high at 1024x768.  I hit low fps points but for the most part it runs ok.

Maybe. But what's the point of even playing then?

I will be upgrading in January when the new 8800 GTS is released.  Not sure when the new Intel chips come out, but hopefully that'll be in January also.

I upgrade when I can't play the games I want anymore (the most advanced game I play if BF2, so my standards aren't high...) or when the hardware I want is on super sale and I have the cash for it.

I am using the same motherboard I bought in July 2005.
I have 2 6600GT's in SLI, and I had added the second card in October 2005.
I upgraded the CPU (from A64 3000+ to A64X2 4800+) and HDD (added a 250GB WD) in January 2007.
I upgraded the RAM (from 1GB to 2GB) in February 2007.

I will probably buy a new video card soon, so I can use dual monitors and play a game without reconfiguring SLI mode (turning it on/off, etc...).

I will stick with this computer for probably another year or two, because it fits my needs pretty well.  That, and I don't have a lot of money to buy enough new parts, since the next computer will need a new motherboard, cpu, ram and I will probably get a new case.

Before I do that, I will be more likely to throw together a NAS device with ~2 TB RAID5 and gigabit ethernet, since my main use for computers has changed since I built it originally.

I am the same. If I cannot play the new 'must have' titles on high or respectable settings, then I feel the need to upgrade. This 'step-up' in hardware demand normally only happens at least every year, so it's not such an expensive preference . Although, one of the biggest problems with it is the way that technology 'moves on' altogether. A month ago I was in the situation where socket939 and DDR RAM didn't cut the bread anymore, even though it was a respectable system ~12 months prior to that. So, now I'm sat here on a quad-core SLi'd DDR2 machine, just wondering when that ultra-expensive DDR3 RAM is going to become the industry standard >.<.

I do have one exception when it comes to my 'upgrade rule', and that is with storage space. Within reason, I'll buy more internal hard-drives as I need them. Supply 'n' demand style. Although, when I say "within reason", I mean when there's nothing more that I can't possibly delete, and no more space that I can possibly save.

I usually do major upgrades every 1.5 - 2 years. HDs and stuff I add when I need them

When I feel it's appropriate. My AMD 64 3500+ was coming to the end of its life and I wanted to go to a C2D so I ended up getting a E6600, new motherboard and 2GBs of DDR2 which is all pretty much a given if games are going to use the Unreal 3 engine more. Only thing dragging me down now is my X1800GTO which I'm going to replace and get an 8800GT. Really it's all about not having the "latest and greatest" but about knowing when to bank on having good, future proof parts at affordable prices. I was pretty pleased to get my E6600 for just £85 (stand-alone chip) from ebay as opposed to shelling out closer to £150 at the cheapest website.

I'll probably get a new video card when I can afford it, but otherwise my system will play all my games on max with good FPS.

New nVidia 9 series in the summer, guess this GA-P35-DS4 board from Gigabyte and C2D e6850 will hold out for a long while in combination with a new gfx card. I have a 8800GTX now but ill ugprade to 9 series just for games like crysis.
