My house got burgled this evening...

I came home about 4.30pm today to discover my back window smashed in, I immediately began scanning the rest of the house and slowly realised my house had been ransacked ...or so I had thought. My flatmates had had their doors smashed in (my door was the only one not locked) and every drawer in the house had been pulled out and rifled through. The thing is they only took one shitty laptop from my flatmate's room; I'd say the laptop has a resale value of about €100, if you were lucky.

They decided not to take €600 in cash, a PS3, a PSP, an iPod, passports, mobile phones, four DVD players, a 32" flat screen TV, three desktop computers, over 2000 DVDs, a shitload of xmas presents (all neatly wrapped and in bags), an original Fender guitar, an electric double bass, a fretless Ibanez bass, a 6 string Washburn bass, a Trace Elliot bass amp and a load of concert tickets.

What the hell were they playing at? Me and my flatmates are really confused as to why someone would go to such trouble only to make off with an unsellable laptop. Any suggestions or conspiracy theories?

They probably didn't think they had much time, and took whatever they saw first. I dunno...

We have the theory that one of our flatmates here is actually Jason Bourne. They're gonna be really disappointed when they check that laptop out, I don't even think it has Solitaire on it!

Probably drug addicts or the like that just wanted something small and easy to transport to sell.

I love the word 'burgled'.

Yeah I suppose but it would have been easier to take the PSP, PS3 and iPod than the laptop (they were right next to each other too) ...and leaving cash in note form is just bizarre. They also were there long enough to destroy three doors and check every single drawer in the house. It's weird.

Thank God your guitars and amp were ok.

Depends on the layout and how things were. I'd imagine you'd want to just get in and out as quick as possible and just bag whatever you see first.

Not that I would know.

Maybe they we're looking for something specifically?

Do you know anyone with a grudge against you?

They've planted a bomb in your flat. Obviously.

Perhaps they were just stupid. Maybe they had been asked to specifically steal that type of laptop (or perhaps simply that laptop belonging to you/your flat mates) and were burglars with high morales and wouldn't take the rest of your possessions - but still rather inquisitive types and wished to see what you had lying around.
Best I've got.

sounds like something that happened at my work a year ago, several offices were broken into and all they took were laptops, no pcs, no software, no monitors, a bunch of other expensive equipment that they could have easily gotten away with, but no only the laptops were missing. perhaps theyre looking for sensitive information you may have left on your laptop.

It was either Jews, Muslims. Both or the Northern Irish. Or all three in some sort of super team of terrorism.

When all else fails, blame Jews, Muslims and your Local Rebels.

Laptops are the holy grail of personal information, if they were that smart.

Maybe they were looking for credit card and/or bank information.
Thats why they went through all the drawers and only took the laptop.

Or maybe they were looking for drugs and took the laptop because they wanted one and it was easy.

Where were you between the hours of 2 and 5 this afternoon!?

It's quite funny actually, they obviously cut themselves coming in the window cos there's a bit of blood around the place. They picked the worst possible place to enter the house ...our back door has about a million bottles stacked up against and it's impossible to open.

On the idea of credit card info/personal details...

We thought about this but they missed all of my credit card statements and financial documentation and the laptop has nothing on it (not that they would have known that though).

On the idea of grudges...

We thought about this too and I don't think there is anyone who would go to such lengths or would even know where we live in any case (out of the many people that have grudges against us!).

Also...

The cops have told us not to touch anything until the C.S.I. guys get here, probably tomorrow morning. So we're not supposed to clear the shit off our beds to sleep in them tonight. Anyone out there think that's a bit ridiculous after an already traumatic day? ..Looks like I'm sleeping on the couch tonight.

Ask a cop, they'll tell you the various burglar profiles...the junkie looking for easily sellable/tradable items, the cash cow who steals everything, the killer looking to rape and assault (robber), and there's the information specialist.

RARELY are there burglars who combine those profiles.  You rarely will have someone stealing your cameras, game devices, jewelry, guns AND information or vice versa.

This burglar could be after identification data...so your roommate better figure out what the burglar will get off that laptop.

I was hit by a junkie earlier this year...digi cam, digi camcorder, xbox, power drill...left credit cards behind which were in the wide open...actually opened my brief case and took my gold wedding ring out and left it on the chair.  It's true, each theif is there for ONE thing only.

lol, that's a joke.  the next day to lift prints and leave their dust all over your furniture and carpet?  you must have asked for printing to be done..because normally that's fruitless..especially when there's 4 college age guys living in a place and presumed traffic from friends.  What possible good is it to get prints?

...I suppose only to run prints through the system and see if anyone with some priors shows up. They better be done in plenty of time for us to get ready for Hatton Vs. Mayweather tomorrow night though!

We actually live in a fairly posh area of Dublin, south of the river.
