My first phone was:

A Motorola V220 that my parents got me and my sister in 7th grade for Christmas for our first cell phones.  It had a pretty bad camera that couldn't record videos like everybody else's and my parents also didn't want to pay for texting because they just didn't see the point

https://www.tic-tok.net/store/product_images/e/893/v220__19202_zoom.jpg

Then I got the standard Motorola Razr V3 in black which was a lot better in most ways, can't remember if it had a video camera, but it was a very durable phone.  The menu was kind of sluggish and the camera was pretty bad though still a step up from the V220.  Still had no texting yet, my parents only bought it for themselves for their phones and didn't see a need for me and my sister to have it yet

https://welectronics.com/gsm/Motorola/motorolav3_black.jpg

Then between 10th and 11th grade I upgraded to a gunmetal Motorola Razr V3xx, it had a significantly faster processor and so was a much faster phone overall, it also had a 1.3MP camera(my first whole megapixel camera) that was also capable of videos, the picture quality was comparable even to the 3MP phone I got next.  First phone with an SD card slot.  Much better call quality as well, people would even complement me on it.  It had a much higher quality and sturdier feel in every area over the cheaper Razr, this was a REALLY nice phone for its time compared to the regular throwaway standard Razr that gave everybody a bad taste in their mouth.  The Razr V3xx is probably my favorite phone so far, unfortunately one day it just decided to stop turning on though, otherwise I'd be using it as a replacement now.  My parents finally gave us unlimited texting at some point while I had this phone and for the first time in my life I could send and receive texts whenever I wanted

https://www.digicircle.com/images/product_image/MotorolaRAZRV3xx.gif

Then I got a Samsung Impression for my upgrade the summer before I started my first year of community college, I remember the lady at Best Buy commenting on my SIM chip being a pretty old one as it went into this, as it was the same Cingular-branded one from out of my V220 from before AT&T bought out Cingular.  The phone had a 3 Megapixel camera capable of pictures and recording as well as slide-out QWERTY keyboard(first for me), call quality was usable while there was any call quality to be had, it got the job done.....until it started to deteriorate about a year and a few months after I got it; first I couldn't hear anybody talking unless I held the phone just right or put it on speakerphone which I had resorted to just doing every time, and then eventually the touch aspect of the screen itself intermittently stopped working with increasing frequency until it just plain didn't work at all anymore(somebody else in one of my classes had the same thing on the same phone), which made the phone completely unusable as the only buttons left were the physically present ones such as the volume, lock and camera buttons and I could no longer put the phone on the necessary speakerphone when answering calls due to the touchscreen not working anymore.  It would've been a very likeable phone if the build quality wasn't so bad.

https://driven2batshitcrazy.files.wordpress.com/2010/10/samsung-impression-phone-1024x5771.jpg

Then as a replacement after not having a working phone after two months, I decided to use my sister's old Samsung Solstice which had actually made it through the two years.  I don't know how it was when it was new but it's much worse functionally than mine was when it worked.  Smaller screen, awful 2MP camera, SD card slot retaining mechanism is broken, incoming call quality is virtually non-existent and I have to frequently ask people to repeat themselves because they come through garbled and quiet.  Texting is a little awkward, having only an accelerometer-activated QWERTY keyboard on the small touschscreen that frequently makes mistakes.  The back panel comes off a lot when it gets stuck to my wallet too.  It either sucked to begin with or it's a very tired phone now.  Doesn't really matter either way, cuz I lost it during the power outage a week ago at some point between my brother's house and mine.

https://www.cellphoneanswers.info/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/samsung-solstice-300x300.jpg

So as of right now, I have no phone.  I'm probably going to have to blow the upgrade I'm due for on another cheap shitty embarrassing phone and then pay full price for an unlocked nicer smartphone when I have a job and can afford to pay for data finally like every single other person I know.  The irony is I'm considered the go-to tech person by most people I know and I'm the only one that doesn't have a smartphone yet.  Not even sure what I wanna get yet, I'd really like a Droid Razr to continue the good experiences I've had with the Razr name and Motorola in general but they don't have it for GSM networks(AT&T), only Verizon I think.

Hey man if you want a really basic cheap smartphone you might like the AT&T Fusion that I got. It's $150 to buy then it's $50 a month for 250 minutes of calling, unlmited texting, and 1GB of data. I never run out of data or minutes so that's a good plan for me. The phone is ok. The storage is frustrating me, but maybe that's because I can't figure it out or something. It's a good cheap phone though with Android. Not something I'd recommend long term but I'll probably keep it for a year or two and then get a really good phone.

I'm not a fan of smartphones but there weren't really any good alternatives. In Switzerland there was a much larger variety of regular phones instead of smartphones and I was an absolute Sony Ericsson fan so my next phone will probably be a one of those. Hopefully I can find a smartphone I actually like that's very customizable. Let me know if any of you guys have suggestions cause I'd hate to give up the ability to use internet anywhere at any time but I hate annoying smartphones with apps you can't uninstall that just bloat your storage and homepages you can't customize. Not going to ever get an iPhone.

Pretty sure I've seen Android phones go for less and $150 is way out of my ballpark, I got like $30 in my pocket and somebody owes me 20 so that's the best I can do.  I would probably just stick to the family plan I'm already on and just pay for the cheapest data plan at $20 a month like my sister or maybe step it up to data + tethering for like 25 or 30 or whatever it is.

Fuck I wish we were like Europe, then we could all still have unlimited data, not pay extra for tethering and pay less to begin with for the phones.  The American phone industry is the most fucked up thing in existence but I have heard Canada's even worse

Well it looks like I get it for free on the same plan for a 16GB phone. Extra $5 a month for 32GB and extra $9 for 64GB. Plan is $99 per month, unlimited calls.

Let's do a run-down of my phones..

Nokia 3330, got it when I was about 12/13, played Snake on it and never had credit. Was to excite the bitches, innit. Built like a brick, had WLAN.

Second one was a Sony Ericsson T-something-or-other, the one on the right here. I just got major nostalgia chillfactor looking at it.

Terrible phone, the selector stick broke very quickly, no internal storage etc etc.

Then I had this little bugger in black

Pretty terrible. Not much more to say.

Then I had a very terrible Samsung which was worse than the Razr and so bad I've completely blocked the model number out my face.

Then I got a Blackberry Bold 8800

Had the scroll wheel and urrthan. Pretty decent, first Wifi phone, mostly used for watching Youtube videos in the shower.

Now I have this sexy machine

BlackBerry Bold 9900. Touch screen, 1.2Ghz Snapdragon, physical QWERTY keyboard, all the gadgets any other smartphone has (minus the useless for my needs app stores). Love it to bits. Sexxxxy.
blackberry bold is a piece of shit.  It's an artifact compared to the iphone 3gs.  I have both.  the only function I would use the bold for is email because it's better integrated to msoft outlook, something a blue-collar scot like yourself probably doesn't utilize.

Hey Jeakus what do you think of this? I'm just saying there are alternatives to the iPhone 5. I know little about smart phones but I thought I'd share this with you just in case it would keep you from making a potentially bad choice.

edit:

10 way Android still beats the iPhone 5

sure.  it's clunky, the BB OS is god awful, the navigation within the menus and using the scrollbar/touch screen is garbage, the screen is about 2/3 the size of the iphone 3gs, the qwerty keyboard is hell to type on unless you're some slender-fingered shyster.  I don't really care about the camera as I'm not out trying to be a photographer with my phone - if I want to take pictures on the go, the difference between 5 and 3 MP isn't that big of a deal to me.  And the app store is garbage, which your statement mentions but dismisses while in the same sentence saying it's got all the gadgets any other smartphone does.  The app store on the BB is absolutely horrible.  The whole interface is horrible.

its not built as solid as the iphone in my opinion.

I forgot, I like the fact that I can view attachments like excel on the blackberry too.
