FDR made people give up their gold in 1933, and we're not exactly in some kind of Stalinist nightmare state. Even if you claim vagueness, there's no real reason to believe that this is going to be used to take the shirts off of the backs of every anti-war protest.

A few days ago, Bush signed a new executive order in which he uses broad language to claim that he has the power to seize the property of any person who undermines efforts to promote economic reconstruction and political reform in Iraq. The language in the executive order is broadly defined and does not specifically identify a specific group of individuals that the order applies to. It opens up the possibility of anti-war protesters and other political dissidents having their property confiscated for simply speaking out against the war.
The legalese is a bit tough to muddle through, so I made a translation for you.

Damn, if only we had an election sometime soon! If only we could have the ability to hear on every news channel about primaries and elections and the details of every candidate ever, but where oh where could we find something like that?

"to have materially assisted, sponsored, or provided financial, material, logistical, or technical support for, or goods or services in support of, such an act or acts of violence or any person whose property and interests in property are blocked pursuant to this order; "

Is that so bad?
It just opens the door to holding many people accountable for the act of an individual. By this wording, the owner of the gunstore can be held accountable for the actions of the 'crazy terrorist gunner' due to his material assitance.

I guess some of you did read the entire thing right?

"Sec. 8. This order is not intended to, and does not, create any right, benefit, or privilege, substantive or procedural, enforceable at law or in equity by any party against the United States, its departments, agencies, instrumentalities, or entities, its officers or employees, or any other person. "
chuys concern was for the loss of our rights. and this sec. 8 clearly states that the order does not "create any right, benefit, or privilege, substantive or procedural, enforceable at law or in equity by any party against" any american. its just clearly stating that the order can be used against anyone, regardless of their place in society. correct?

It means that smartasses like the rabid anti-war people here can't use the act to try and deprive the U.S. of property in court on the basis that it's the cause of instability in Iraq.

If that's what it takes.  I love this country, and fully support our due process system or courts.  If the Feds tried to seize my property without due process, I'd take out as many of them as I could.  And I guarantee you my K : D ratio would better than 1:1.
the scary thing is thats the moment where they get to use this executive order against U.S. citizens. they can just track down the known dissenters with our new 2008 radio id chips and throw us in FEMA camps. Like every police station in the country has a SWAT team now so good luck with that impressive KD

This progress of fascism, and our "patriotic" defense of the growing institution is pretty marvelous to watch when you know how ideologically opposed the American should be based on our founding documents. Its like watching a magic act. Some shit that should be impossible but is happening before your eyes. But then our founding documents are pretty old, and life has changed a lot. i guess its no surprise that the average comfortable american has forgotten the necessity for civil rights.

First of all, forgive me if this has been discussed but I didn't read all 6 pages yet.

So let me get this straight. Let's say I take participate in a big anti-something protest, where somehow it gets ugly and you get clashes with the police (the latter have been found to start the violence many a time). Does that mean that if I get caught I'll be a non peaceful protester? Because if that's the case then this is really messed up.

Wow, I just read the entire thread and all I can say is I have never seen the BF2s neo-cons get so utterly face raped in all my time here.

I could of sworn I made a thread talking about how this shit was going to start happening a while back.  I also remember everyone saying I was a paranoid conspiracy theorist.  Well, now it's happening, so fuck you all.

Yeah, it's hardly as if all the crap GW has done is going to Ctrl + Z it's self when Bush leaves office. I'm confused as to why USM has so much confidence in the next batch of government.

I said it as clear as I possibly could. The President is invoking the International Emergency Economic Powers Act on US citizens to promote political reform in a foreign country. If you can't see the danger in that I've said all I can.
